Why Consider an Energy Savings Program? School systems have an increasingly difficult time securing sufficient local dollars for programs. Energy costs continue to rise. In most districts energy is the second largest line item in the budget. Costs can be reduced without sacrificing safety or comfort. 1

Two Ways to Reduce Energy Consumption Capital Improvement Program People-oriented and People-driven Program 2

EduCon’s Three Steps to an Efficient and Practical Program 1.Uses proven energy conservation strategies and technologies. 2.Uses energy accounting software that establishes high accountability standards. 3.Uses local leadership with coordination, training, and assistance from EduCon personnel. 3

Responsibility of Board and Administration Employ an energy manager from the current energy budget. Support EduCon and energy conservation measures through statements of public support for the program. Adopt an energy policy and system wide energy guidelines. Purchase the energy accounting software and provide required computer hardware. 4

Responsibility of Educon Assist Board of Education in developing energy policy and/or guidelines. Assist administration/staff in developing energy guidelines and conservation strategies. Train energy manager Provide training on energy accounting software Audit buildings with energy manager 5

Financial Considerations No additional capital expenditures No additional implementation costs No financial risk to the district – EduCon does not invoice for services until after the accumulated savings exceed agreed-upon monthly fees. 6

Program Implementation The program can be implemented at any time. There is no need to increase the budget for implementation of the program. Implementation costs come from savings in current energy budget. 7

Proven Results Rowan-Salisbury Schools saved $10,105,000 (25%) in eleven years. Nash-Rocky Mount Schools saved $10,675,000 (27%) in nine years. Yadkin County Schools saved $2,007,000 (21%) in nine years. Mitchell County Schools saved $820,000 (32%) in three years. 8

Proven Results Scotland County Schools saved $2,252,000 (19%) in six years. Rutherford County Schools saved $3,500,000 (27%) in five years. Montgomery County Schools saved $1,264,000 (20%) in five years. 9

Summary The EduCon energy management program is people oriented with proven results. Accountability is an important component of the program. Implementation occurs with the assistance of energy manager. 10

Summary Awareness of the benefits and importance of energy conservation by all employees is crucial. Implementing the program does not require an increase in your budget. Three year NO RISK contract. 11
