HOW DO WE FIND OUT ABOUT THE CHARACTERS IN OUR STORIES? Characterization in Literature

We already know the two major types of characters: Flat/Static There is nothing beneath the surface. Multi-dimensional/ Dynamic There are layers of personality and growth as a person.

The Protagonist The Antagonist But there are also:

We find out more details in 3 ways: Can you guess what they are? In what way do we describe people?  1. Physical Qualities  2. Psychological Qualities  3. Moral Qualities

1. Physical Qualities The attributes we use to describe what someone looks like (brown eyes, tall, etc.) What are Cruella’s physical qualities?

2. Psychological Qualities The way we describe someone’s character or personality (outgoing, smart, indecisive, etc.) What are Cruella’s psychological qualities?

3. Moral Qualities The qualities a person has which become evident based on the choices they make (honesty, loyalty, integrity, etc.) What are Cruella’s moral qualities?

Characters may be developed in a story in the following ways: 1. What the narrator says 2. What the character says him/herself 3. What other characters say about him/her 4. How other characters react toward him/her 5. Things the character does or doesn’t do

Who are YOU as a character? Using the 5 ways characters are developed, write a short paragraph about yourself. Discuss what you did today. When you’re finished, swap paragraphs with a partner. They will read your paragraph and, based on the information you have given, they will jot down your physical, psychological, and moral qualities.

What do you know about these characters?
