The Letter to Corinth 2 nd Corinthians Emily Anderson

Paul the Apostle 2 nd Corinthians is Paul’s second letter to the church in Corinth. Most scholars consider this a biographical letter. Paul defends his integrity and missionary work. Paul as a key missionary. Paul’s importance. Wrote two epistles to the Corinth church.

Location Believed to be written between A.D. Written somewhere in Macedonia Delivered to Corinth church by Titus.

Background Paul completed three large mission trips. 1 Corinthians was Paul’s first attempt to sway the church back into morality. 2 nd Corinthians followed after an unfavorable response from the church. Many questioned Paul’s authority as an apostle and his integrity. 2 nd Corinthians is a biographical epistle of Paul’s life. Paul’s character was attacked by false apostles. Mainly unchanged Judaist teachers. Many of Paul’s opponents were previously his followers.

Historical Events Between A.D. Christianity emerges from Palestine (50 A.D.) Paul completes his missionary journeys. Emperor Claudius in murdered (54 A.D.) Fire of Rome (64 A.D.); first persecution of Christians. His predecessor Nero commits suicide (68 A.D.) Jews revolt against Rome (69 A.D.)

Paul’s Plea Paul defends himself as an apostle. Through his epistle, Paul gives the church of Corinth a second chance. Immorality and Christian persecution led to false prophets. Those in power were reluctant to change their ways. Those living in Christ defined sin didn’t want to be considered unworthy. Paul offers forgiveness and a chance at redemption. He also warns of the consequences of continuing on their current plight.

Paul’s visit Paul returns to Corinth to confront and aid members of the church. The result is the church participating in the Jerusalem offering. Paul’s third visit to Corinth is successful. 2 Corinthians serves as explicit text to Jesus purpose on Earth. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin: that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (5:21).

Important verses “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (5:7) “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darknes” (6:14). ‘For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ” (11:13). “For though he as crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you” (13:4).
