Lesson Objective: To know the factors affecting cliff retreat and explain the effects on people

Starter I can see… I think… I wonder …

Resident s TouristsConservat ionists Governm ent Local Authoritie s Coastal protection agencies Residents Preserve homes and jobs Tourists Want access to coast with no restrictions Conservati onists Preserve local habitats and protect wildlife Governme nt Has to consider actions from place to place. Use public money to benefit the majority Local Authorities Look after interests of as many people as possible Coastal Protection Agencies Choose the most vulnerable places – coastal management is very expensive. This is a conflict matrix  fill in the rest of the blank boxes. I have done the easy ones for you!!!

Why do cliffs collapse? There are several reasons why cliffs collapse: 1. Marine processes  cliff bases eroded by hydraulic action and abrasion= steeper cliff 2. Weathering weakens rocks 3. Heavy rain saturates permeable rock at the top. May also erode cliff faces as it goes down 4. Water flows through permeable rock adding to the weight of the cliff 5. Human actions  buildings add to the weight which can push down onto a weak cliff.

Christchurch Bay  Christchurch Bay is located on the UK’s South Coast. It has a severe erosion problem. It needs management to stop the cliffs eroding over 2 meters a year  Barton-on-Sea is part of Christchurch Bay. Mass movement here is the major problem  Christchurch Bay is prone to erosion as it has a 3000 mile fetch across the Atlantic Ocean.

Impacts on Christchurch Bay  Homeowners could loose their homes to the sea. House value will decrease dramatically and insurance may not be given  Dangerous conditions in terms of falling rocks and unpredictable slumping  Sometimes roads and infrastructure are destroyed  Area becomes unattractive and tourism may decrease leading to economic impacts  SOLUTION??? Sea defences- but they are expensive and some people don’t think its worth it

People and Coastal Retreat  Read page of your text book  Complete Activity 2 and 3 in your book Extension  complete skills builder 5

Holderness Case Study  Where is Holderness located?  Describe what Holderness is like  What makes Holderness prone to erosion?  What are the options available to people in Holderness?  What has already been lost in Holderness?  Read the opinions on coastal management- put them into an order of Strongly for and strongly against coastal management  What are the costs and benefits to managing the coast?  What do you think they should do?

Plenary  Share your ideas for what should happen to Holderness- try and get a mini-debate going!
