How to extract physics from ν d y n Peter Christiansen, Lund Work done together with Eva Haslum and Evert Stenlund

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 2 ● What is ν d y n and what does it measure – Original idea: S. Voloshin for STAR, INPC2001, arXiv:nucl-ex/ v1. C.Pruneau, S.Gavin, and S.Voloshin, (PRC 66, , 2002). – Mathematical properties and simple models for ν d y n ( PRC 80, , 2009 ) ● Example: Forward-backward fluctuations in pp ● Generalization of ν d y n to continuous variables ● Conclusions Outline

How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 3 Motivation for studying fluctuations ● Large fluctuations expected near QCD tri-critical point ● Provide “L2” discrimination between models (not only mean, but also fluctuations) T=0.97TcT=0.99Tc Ex.:2d ising model T=1.00TcT=1.01Tc T=1.06TcT=1.15Tc

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 4 Idea explained via 2d contour plot m = #pions n = #kaons Mean (1d) We study systems where the ratios m/N and n/N (N=m+n) are almost constant.

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 5 Idea explained via 2d contour plot ν d y n = 0 Statistical fluctuations: √m and √n “1σ” contour Mean (1d) n = #kaons m = #pions

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 6 Idea explained via 2d contour plot m = #pions n = #kaons Mean (1d) ν d y n > 0 ν d y n = 0 ν d y n < 0

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 7 Mathematical expression for ν d y n ● Consider – It has mean 0! ● We define – Easy statistical behavior (no event mixing): ● Allows the study of dynamical fluctuations: ● 3 terms: cancels trivial correlations, e.g., centrality! ● Independent of efficiencies

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 8 ● Definition: ● For M=m+n, then the pair probability (mm) is: ● So we can rewrite ν d y n as: ● M=2 → pair probabilities can be written uniquely as: ● Consider M/2 pairs → What dynamical fluctuations are measured by ν d y n →

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 9 Comment on 1/ dependence ● Consider N independent sources ● Number of correlated pairs goes as N ● Number of uncorrelated pairs goes as N*(N-1) ● → 1/N dependence in this case! ● Feature of the model! – It measures the pair correlations ● NB! It does not have to go as 1/ if you increase or decrease (CGC?) the correlations in central collisions 12N

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 10 ● For symmetric intervals we have p=½, e.g.: – Fwd: 1 < η < 2 and Bck: -2 < η < -1 ● Interest from phenomenology – Strong correlation between N f w d and N bck (UA5+STAR) ● Signals collective behavior in pp – NB! ν dyn filters out these correlations An example: Forward-backward correlations mn

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 11 Forward backward fluctuations PYTHIA Min bias pp √s = 200 GeV No p T cut! Bck:-1<η<0 Fwd:0<η<1 N b c k c h N f w d c h N b c k + + N b c k - N f w d + + N f w d - 1 term 6 terms (3 different)

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 12 Forward backward fluctuations ● (Stenlund) sum rule: ● NB! Note the minus sign. ● Primarily probe charge conservation and transport N b c k c h N f w d c h N b c k + + N b c k - N f w d + + N f w d - PYTHIA Min bias pp √s = 200 GeV No p T cut! Bck:-1<η<0 Fwd:0<η<1

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 13 Pseudo rapidity dependence 0<|η|<11<|η|<2

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 14 Pseudo rapidity dependence 0<|η|<11<|η|<2 Bck Fwd ++ Bck Fwd - + Bck Fwd - + Bck Fwd +/- ~const for all Δη→ 0 for Δη → ∞

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 15 Pseudo rapidity dependence 0<|η|<11<|η|<2 ● Fluctuations measured by ν d y n for PYTHIA are dominated by charge conservation – general limit of method: strangeness (K - +K + ), baryon number (p+pbar) → negative dynamical fluctuations ● NB! Results in positive ν d y n for sums, e.g., m=K - +K + ● To search for long range correlations: ν d y n ( +,+) vs (+ & +) ● Alternative: Study e.g., π 0 vs π +

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 16 Generalization to continuous variables m = #pions → x = N, stock i, T n = #kaons → y= Σp T stock j CO 2 Mean (1d) ν dyn > 0 ν dyn = 0 ν dyn < 0

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 17 Generalized expression and interpretation ● The general expression becomes: ● And is consistent with the old definition because for numbers: ● Because we know that ν d y n cancels trivial correlations we can consider a local Gaussian model: ● Then we find that

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 18 Simulated examples ρ l =- 0.5 ρl=0ρl=0 ρ l =+0. 8 ρ l =- 0.5 ρl=0ρl=0 ρ l =+0. 8 ● Results are as predicted on previous slide (curves) ● Statistical error increases when ρ l is decreased

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 19 Problem: How to determine σ? ● For numbers there is a natural statistics: – Poisson ● There is no general continuous statistic – We have to determine σ example by example ● And it is not clear how! And if it is at all possible.... ● If we compare to a model we can always use ν: ● But then the result we get is model dependent. In one model the fluctuations can be dynamical and in another not (or have different sign!).

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 20 Conclusions ● Dynamical fluctuations of number variables – Measures non-trivial part of pair probabilities – Limited by conservation e.g. charge and strangeness – Sum rule is needed to understand ν d y n for sums ● Dynamical fluctuations of continuous variables – Mathematically easy to define and interpret – Determine of the statistical σ is not straight forward and could introduce model dependence ● Could provide 2 nd order discrimination for models that describe the global correlations

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 21 Backup slides

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 22 Σp T vs N dynamical fluctuations ● Interest to understand the rise of with multiplicity in pp → try to use v dyn ● We need Σp T vs N and not vs N for ν to be able to remove the trivial correlations ● The statistical fluctuations of m and pT are: ● So that ν dyn becomes:

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 23 Extracting σ 2 Σpt (N + fwd ) ● PYTHIA √s = 200 GeV, fwd: 0 < η < 2, bck: -2 < η < 0 ● No p T cut and only positive particles to avoid charge conservation effects

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 24 ν dyn (N + fwd, Σpt(+,fwd)) and ν dyn (N + bck, Σpt(+,fwd)) ● As expected we find almost minimal negative fluctuations for ν dyn (N + fwd, Σpt(+,fwd)) (stars) – this is due to auto correlations! ● For ν dyn (N + bck, Σpt(+,fwd)) (circles) we find no dynamic fluctuations! ● This observable could perhaps 2 nd order discriminate between models: string recombination, dipoles, flow... PYTHIA √s = 200 GeV, fwd: 0 < η < 2, bck: -2 < η < 0

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 25 ● The expression: ● Is dynamical in the sense that it measures the part of the pair- probabilities that deviates from that expected from the single particle probabilities ● ν dyn < 0: m and n shows smaller than statistical fluctuations, e.g., conservation. ● ν dyn > 0: m and n shows larger than statistical fluctuations, e.g., phase transition. Interpretation of dynamical fluctuations measured by ν dyn

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 26 Why study the 3 terms together ● Each of the terms are sensitive to “centrality variations”, i.e., for a sum of Poisson distributions we are sensitive to the global variation: ● This global variation is the same for all 3 terms – → Adding the 3 terms this depence falls out!

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 27 ν dyn (N fwd, N bck ) vs N fwd +N bck ● I want to use that ν dyn (N + fwd,N + bck )~0 to make sure that when I construct ν dyn (N + bck, Σpt(+,fwd)) I do not have any dynamical fluctuations at the particle level! – Otherwise the fluctuations could originate from particle number fluctuations

27/8-2010How to extract physics from ν-dyn CPOD Peter Christiansen (Lund) 28 Pseudo rapidity dependence ● I believe that the fluctuations in bin 4 <|η|<5 are dominated by the net-protons 0<|η|<11<|η|<22<|η|<3 3<|η|<44<|η|<5
