Thesis Statement for Problem-Solution Essay 1.consists of 2 parts: topic and then the blueprint 2.very specific statement 3.end of 1st paragraph 4.can be written as two sentences Examples: Look at the examples provided and identify if this would an appropriate problem-solution thesis or not. If it isn’t, tell what is wrong with it. 1.Internet piracy is a big problem for many companies. 2.Smoking should be banned because it is bad for your health, it costs too much and it affects those who do not smoke. 3.The melting ice caps pose a real and present danger to our world and, if left unchecked, will cause world-wide disasters in the future. Scientists have researched two viable ways to slow the disintegration of the ice caps. 4.Many children suffer long-term consequences of bullying. However, the problem can be remedied through a three-pronged approach: educating the parents, encouraging a community atmosphere, and implementing a peer mediation program.

The current rate and disposal at which fossil fuels are being depleted are harming our environment, wallets, and future generation’s lifestyles. Enacting alternative energy sources and clean transportation possibilities will take the place of these harmful fossil fuels and provide energy in a greener and renewable Each year the poverty rate rises in America. Even people who have a full time job are struggling to come up with the cost of living because they are affected by the severely low rate of minimum wage. To help give people a more healthy living style and increase the efficiency of the American economy, the minimum wage needs to be increased slowly; in addition, there needs to be a plan to index the rate to inflation each year so that the cost of living will not skyrocket. Human sex trafficking is a large issue all around the world, affecting women and men as they are taken and forced into prostitution. The way to end this problem is to severely punish national and multinational profiters; and furthermore, install programs to offer victims a way out.

Today we are going to talk about research and cards -- we will talk about MLA format in the paper later. MLA

MLA powerpoint.ppt Remember Yo u are NOT writing a book report You should have all five - six sources cited in your paper You should have multiple perspectives represented in your paper This paper has NOTHING to do with what YOU know about your topic -- it is what you find in ACADEMIC SOURCES

Y ou need: 5-6 sources total -- no more and no less -- Make sure you have at LEAST two sources to cite for each section of your paper (we want varied perspectives - not a book report) You will primarily need to use NEWS sources for this paper. Locate these through the databases (elibrary, NCWiseOwl) or directly from a news site time.com Note that you are NOT able to use a website unless it is a news site Absolutely DO NOT use the Wikis, blogs, etc

We are going to use google docs to create the research portion of your paper. NO EXCEPTIONS **See Handout You will create 5 documents Thesis Problem Solution Effects of Implementing Solution Works Cited

Things to Consider Co py and paste a minimum of 8 facts (include citation) Either beside via a chart or underneath via a different font, paraphrase the direct quote (include internal citation for your paraphrase) I should be able to see BOTH your paraphrase and D.Q. Remember you will only have 10% of directly quoted material for entire paper -- that's approx 5-6 direct quotes total You must use a different color of text to represent each source Source 1 -- Orange Source 2 -- Blue Source 3 -- Green Source 4 -- Red Source 5 - Purple Source 6 -- Black Have headers of the outline on each page (problem, solution, effects) so that you know where to put your facts -- Consider putting these in a different font, bolded, so that they are easy to locate Do NOT delete my comments that show when I checked yours

Instead of Source cards, you are going to put your source information DIRECTLY onto your Works Cited page -- don't worry about alphabetizing them now -- you will do that later when we put it into a word document

What you need to know: I will check your sources and paraphrases ONLINE I will monitor progress AS we go -- Google docs timestamps when you last edit -- I can tell HOW you are using your time I can/will insert comments into your documents -- I can not only read what you are entering, but I can edit as well

5 Steps to Remember 1. Reread your fact until you understand its full meaning. 2. Copy and paste the original text into the correct section and heading in your google doc 3. Then, follow these tips to create an effective paraphrase a. Use synonyms b. Switch the order of your sentence c. Capture the meaning in your own words 3. Check your rendition with the original to make sure that your version accurately expresses all the essential information in a new form. 4. Make sure you have a citation after both your D.Q. and your paraphrase 5. In your paper, put your citation after each fact that you paraphrase! (Citations should already be there -- don't delete them) Remember -- other than your attention getter or ending quote -- you can only have 5-6 direct quotes!!!!!!! How to Paraphrase

Original Text Students frequently overuse direct quotation in taking notes, and as a result they overuse quotations in the final [research] paper. Probably only about 10% of your final manuscript should appear as directly quoted matter. Therefore, you should strive to limit the amount of exact transcribing of source materials while taking notes. Lester, James D. Writing Research Papers. 2nd ed. (1976): Option A In research papers students often quote excessively, failing to keep quoted material down to a desirable level. Since the problem usually originates during note taking, it is essential to minimize the material recorded verbatim (Lester 46-47). Option B Students should take just a few notes in direct quotation from sources to help minimize the amount of quoted material in a research paper (Lester 46-47). Option C Students often use too many direct quotations when they take notes, resulting in too many of them in the final research paper. In fact, probably only about 10% of the final copy should consist of directly quoted material. So it is important to limit the amount of source material copied while taking Look at the original text -- which one contains an effective paraphrase, which on an effective summary, and which one is the ineffective paraphrase?

Of the more than 1000 bicycling deaths each year, three-fourths are caused by head injuries. Half of those killed are school-age children. One study concluded that wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent. In an accident, a bike helmet absorbs the shock and cushions the head. From "Bike Helmets: Unused Lifesavers," Consumer Reports (May 1990): 348. While the Sears Tower is arguably the greatest achievement in skyscraper engineering so far, it's unlikely that architects and engineers have abandoned the quest for the world's tallest building. The question is: Just how high can a building go? Structural engineer William LeMessurier has designed a skyscraper nearly one-half mile high, twice as tall as the Sears Tower. And architect Robert Sobel claims that existing technology could produce a 500-story building. From Ron Bachman, "Reaching for the Sky." Dial (May 1990): 15. Write an effective paraphrase for each! The use of a helmet is the key to reducing bicycling fatalities, which are due to head injuries 75% of the time. By cushioning the head upon impact, a helmet can reduce accidental injury by as much as 85%, saving the lives of hundreds of victims annually, half of whom are school children ("Bike Helmets" 348). How much higher skyscrapers of the future will rise than the present world marvel, the Sears Tower, is unknown. However, the design of one twice as tall is already on the boards, and an architect, Robert Sobel, thinks we currently have sufficient know-how to build a skyscraper with over 500 stories (Bachman 15).

How to create citations -- If you have a type not listed here -- go to Purdue OWL If there is an author -- Author's LAST name He extensively explored the role of emotion in the creative process ( Wadsworth 263). If NO author, use shortened title of work (shorten title to 3 words or less; punctuate to show the type of work) We see so many global warming hotspots in North America likely because this region has ("Impact of Global Warming" 6). ** We can tell this is an article, if it were a book, it would be italicized rather than in quotes. If you have a work by 2 or more authors The authors state "Tighter gun control in the United States erodes Second Amendment rights" (Smith, Yang, and Moore 76). (If 2, it would be Smith and Moore 76) If you have a work by more than 3 authors Legal experts counter Smith, Yang, and Moore's argument by noting that the current spike in gun violence in America compels law makers to adjust gun laws (Jones et al. 4). Direct Quote According to Foulkes's study, dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (184). No period here Adapted from Purdue OWL
