LAMP High School Library Welcome to the school year

LAMP Librarian Susanne Estes, M.Ed. Husband: Scott Kids: Harrison & Anna Grace Pets: Belle, Charlie Bear, & Tiger Undergraduate: Auburn ‘89, B.S., Business Technology Graduate: UWA ’09 M.Ed., Library Media Taught computer software and business for 14 years, librarian for 7 years

When Can You Come Here? ► 7:00 am – 2:45 pm ► If you come during the school day, you must have a PASS from your teacher ► Maximum of three students per class

How You Can Get Here ► You must have a pass to come during the school day ► Your teacher may bring you as a class (no pass needed!) ► You do not need a pass before or after school ► Sign-in when you get to the library

Once You Get Here ► The library is available for quiet study, reading, and research. ► You may not use devices in the library without teacher permission. ► Please do not sit on the tables. The glass will break.

The Library Has… ► Over 7000 books  May be borrowed for 2 weeks ► Reference books, magazines and newspapers  May be used in the library but not checked out ► Seven computers ► Two printers  Black/white - $0.10  Color - $0.30 ► Student copier  $0.10

How Do I Borrow Books? ► We WILL NOT have library cards. You will show me your LAMP ID at the circulation desk. ► I will stamp the book with the Date Due. ► If you take a book off the shelf and don’t need it, please don’t put it back on the shelf. Place it in my basket or cart. ► Please return or renew books by the Date Due ► Overdue books are $0.10/day

How Can I Work on the Computer? ► Bring a pass from your teacher ► Sign-in at the desk ► You will be assigned an individual username and password (if you were in an MPS school last year, it’s the same) ► Save to your flash drive ► You may print black and white for $0.10 per page and color for $0.40 per page

Dewey Decimal System ► Nonfiction ► Fiction

Nonfiction ► Nonfiction are books about “real” topics. ► They are arranged by the Dewey Decimal Number so that books about the same topics are near each other. ► Biographies are books written about a person. They are on the shelves between Reference and Fiction.

Reference ► “REF” on the spine ► All categories 000 to 999 ► Can’t be checked out  Too big, too tall, etc.  Too expensive to replace  Used too often ► Shelved in a separate section

How Do I Find Books? Atriuum From School: ► Click the Atriuum icon ► Choose your keyword, title or author From Home: ► Go to the LAMP High School website ► Click “Library” ► Click “Links” ► Click “LAMP Card Catalog”

How do I use the computer? Student ID: SXXXXX Password: last four digits of SSN twice! ► If you don’t know your SSN, ask your parents. ► If you don’t have one, the front office will generate a number for you.

What is the AVL? ► It is primarily a group of online databases that have magazine, journal, and newspaper articles for research Who can use it? ► All residents of the state of Alabama ► Under Student Resources, select High School ► Select your resource Alabama Virtual Library

GVRL Gale Virtual Resource Library ► Search by subject, keyword, or reference ► Short video on the GVRL: *The video is not intended to teach you to do all the research. It is intended to show you many of the capabilities of GVRL. ► When you’re using GVRL, you can always select the orange “Help Guide” if you’re looking for a specific method of search

JSTOR What is it? A digital library of academic magazines, books, and primary resources. Username: LAMPHighSchool Password: GoTigers! If you’re logged in correctly, the upper right corner of your screen will look like this:

Huntingdon College Library ► You’ll use your LAMP ID to apply for a library card; they’re FREE ► If you have a Huntingdon library card from previous years, they’ll reactivate it ► Research librarian on-site from 8-5 weekdays and Sunday nights ► Print/copy is $.10/page ► 6 computers – Huntingdon students have priority ► You may use facilities, checkout books, access databases Paige Crumbley, Access librarian

Friendly Reminders ► Sign-in at the desk and leave your pass on the table ► When looking for a book, please don’t reshelve. Place books in basket or cart ► Please bring your LAMP ID when checking out a book ► Black and white copies/printing are $0.10 ► Color printing is $0.30 ► If I’m not here when you’re making copies/printing, please sign the money sheet and leave the money in the glass jar on my desk.
