Judgement and Forgiveness

By the end of the lesson We will have completed work on heaven and hell We will have seen how Christians understand God as a judge We will understand that Christians believe there is a relationship between behaviour and life after death

Heaven and Hell 1)What do Christians believe about heaven? 2)What did hell traditionally mean to Christians? 3)How do Christians usually understand hell in modern times? 4)What is purgatory? You have 10 minutes to answer these questions. Answer in full sentences but do not write out the questions. Cwk 15/12/06

What is a judge? What does it mean to judge someone?

God as Judge Many Christians believe that God will judge them on how much care they have shown to other people during their lives Those who have been kind and compassionate will be rewarded with eternal life in heaven Those who have been selfish and uncaring will be sent away from God

Sheep and Goats This is a parable in Matthew’s Gospel where Jesus teaches that one day God will divide everyone into two groups The good people will be the sheep and go to heaven and the bad people will be the goats and go to hell This story is supposed to be a warning to people about what will happen if they do not live good lives

Draw a table like this one: SheepGoats Put these people into the right categories: *Charity workers *Teachers *Criminals *Rich people who have not shared their wealth *Thieves *Nurses You have 7 minutes for this task.

Forgiveness Even though he is seen as a judge, Christians also believe God is loving and forgiving Christians believe that people who have faith and who are sorry for bad things they have done will be forgiven This is important for Christians because it means they have a chance to change and make up for the wrong they have done

Tasks Write a sentence to explain each of these things: *judgement *forgiveness *parables What do you think happens to people after they die? Try to give reasons for what you think.

By the end of the lesson We will have completed work on heaven and hell We will have seen how Christians understand God as a judge We will understand that Christians believe there is a relationship between behaviour and life after death
