Culture Students will identify the major contributions offered to the world from Ancient Greece.

PROMPT:  How have ideas from Greece helped shape Western civilization?

 Rituals so that they could earn the favor of the Greek Gods.  Festivals were a good way to honor the gods and goddesses. ◦ Athletic games ◦ Olympics ◦ Ceremonies

 Architecture ◦ Temples, dedicated to the Gods and Goddesses ◦ Parthenon dedicated to Athena, Goddess of Athens  Sculpture ◦ Did not seek realism but rather ideal beauty

 Dramas (Theatre) ◦ The first Dramas were tragedies and came in a trilogy ◦ Comedies came later as a way to criticize politicians and intellectuals  Meant to entertain and provoke thought  Greeks were the first to record history in a systematic way ◦ Herodotus  Wrote History of the Persian Wars  First real history as seen by Western Civilization ◦ Thucydides  Greatest historian of the Ancient World  Seen acts of humans not act of gods

The heart of Plato's teachings : – What is the real nature of things? – How do we know what is real? Plato wrote a great deal including The Republic – Distrusted democracy – Three groups Upper Class Warriors Society’s producers (farmers, artisans, trades people)

 Studied at Plato’s Academy  Happiness is tied to behavior ◦came from a life full of virtue ◦Virtue is the middle of extreme behaviors  Courage is in the middle of reckless behavior and cowardice.  Politics ◦Best form of gov’t; constitutional  Aristotle is often seen as the most influential thinker of the Western World.

They laid the foundation of Western Civilization They established a system of government known as the rule of the people or Democracy In their literature, they discussed and weighed out the issues of war, role of women, and humanity’s obligations to the divine. In a very real sense, they struggled with the same concerns we do in the contemporary era. Their art and architecture are still the basis of High Classical Art in the West.
