January 10, 2015 Administrative Complex 8:30-11:30

You are going to write an essay explaining the characteristics of a book that influenced you. Favorite books are fun to read, but influential books are those that form us as people. What was the book that most influenced you, that made you think, gave you an idea, or inspired you to do something? Now, write an essay explaining which book has influenced you the most and why.

Compare the 3 rd grade PASS extended response scoring rubric with the ACT Aspire rubric for grade 3 reflective narrative writing

 Reflective Narrative (3 rd and 6 th )  Analytical Expository (4 th, 7 th, 9 th and 11 th )  Persuasive/Argumentative (5 th and 8 th )

 Analysis (ACT Writing Competencies Model)  Content/Development  Organization  Language Use (Conventions and Voice)

Analyze the Prompt

Graphic organizers are tools that can be used to visualize and organize information.  Making it easy to brainstorm  Encouraging students to organize essential concepts and ideas  Help students structure writing projects May Include:  Webs  Charts or Graphs  Lists

OUTLINE Topic I. _________________________________________________ Subtopic A. ___________________________________________ Supporting details 1. ______________________________________ 2. ______________________________________ 3. ______________________________________ 4. ______________________________________ Subtopic B. ___________________________________________ Supporting details 1. ______________________________________ 2. ______________________________________ 3. ______________________________________ 4. ______________________________________ Subtopic C. ___________________________________________ Supporting details 1. ______________________________________ 2. ______________________________________ 3. ______________________________________ 4. ______________________________________ Subtopic D. ___________________________________________ Supporting details 1. ______________________________________ 2. ______________________________________ 3. ______________________________________ 4. ______________________________________

 Must be at least 50 words long or three sentences minimum  Needs to do three things ◦ Briefly introduce the topic with a strong statement, the hook. ◦ Cleary state the position. ◦ Provide support for the statement (three reasons, details, etc.

 The body paragraph(s) present(s) the supporting information for the thesis (main idea) in an essay. Will include:  Topic Sentence for each reason, detail, etc.  Supporting statements  Closing Sentence

What to include:  Your conclusion wraps up your essay in a tidy package and brings it home for your reader  Your topic sentence should summarize what you said in your thesis statement ◦ This suggests to your reader that you have accomplished what you set out to accomplish  Do not simply restate your thesis statement, as that would be redundant ◦ Rephrase the thesis statement with fresh and deeper understanding  Your conclusion is no place to bring up new ideas  Your supporting sentences should summarize what you have already said in the body of your essay ◦ If a brilliant idea tries to sneak into the final paragraph, you must pluck it out and let it have its own paragraph in the body, or leave it out completely  Your topic for each body paragraph should be summarized in the conclusion ◦ Wrap up the main points  Your closing sentence should help the reader feel a sense of closure  Your closing sentence is your last word on the subject; it is your "clincher" ◦ Demonstrate the importance of your ideas ◦ Propel your reader to a new view of the subject ◦ End on a positive note  Your closing sentence should make your readers glad they read your paper

Using the ACT scoring rubric, analyze your essay for:  Reflection, Analysis or Argument  Development  Organization  Language Use Sample essays

 District requirement for each grade level  Student samples of various required genres  Follow the child from grade to grade  Provide teachers with a writing history

 Day 1- Pre-writing  Day 2- First Draft  Day 3- Revising  Day 4- Editing  Day 5- Final Draft/Publishing
