Organizing the Physical Layout of the Classroom How will you organize the physical layout of the classroom to facilitate movement and support learning?

Before we begin… Before we begin talking about element four, let’s be sure that there is an understanding about how the elements in Design Question 6 (Establishing Rules and Procedures) are related. This is important as you plan your lessons. Watch the video on the next slide. Please take notes, documenting how the elements in Design Question 6 are related.

How do the elements in DQ 6 relate to each other? Introduction to Design Question 6 Note: This video goes into great detail about both elements within DQ6. How are the elements related to each other? You should have noticed that: Both elements in DQ6 must be intentionally planned for prior to students ever entering your classroom. Both of the elements must work together in order to create the necessary conditions to build an effective classroom with established rules and procedures. Now, let’s talk about element five specifically. Element 4: Establishing Classroom Routines Set expectations for behavior as well as academics Explicitly teach and model rules and procedures Review and revisit throughout the lesson as necessary Element 5: Organizing the Physical Layout of the Classroom Arrangement of furniture is conductive to learning Ensure students have access to all materials for class The room décor should reflect student learning Design Question 6: Establishing Rules and Procedures

Review Scale for Element 5

Desired Effect for Student Learning Strategies will only produce desired effect when implemented accurately and in the right context. The desired effect for element 5 is “Students have easy access to classroom materials in an environment that focuses on communicating what is being taught and learned.” To receive an Innovating rating, the teacher must adapt and create new strategies for unique student needs and situations in order for the desired effect to be evident in ALL students.

Remember… The physical layout of your classroom should allow students to: Move easily about the classroom Collaborate with their peers Make use of materials and learning centers Allow students to easily focus on instruction Allow students to easily access technology You may need to adjust the physical layout of your classroom for certain activities/units to best facilitate student learning

It’s Your Evaluation, Make the Most of It! Your evaluator will only rate you on what he/she sees which is OK because it is not necessary for you to have everything checked in the teacher and/or student evidence to receive a good rating. Also, remember you can invite your evaluator to your classroom to see you using this element. You have control of what your evaluator sees.
