 Pastors / Elders / Shepherds / Overseers / Guardians / Etc. Every Healthy Church Must Have Biblical Leaders

 But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self- controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. 6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. Titus 2:1-8 ESV

 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Timothy 2:2

 “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,” Ephesians 4:11-12 God Gave Special People as Gifts to the Early Church.

  “elders of the community, town, or gate.”   Leviticus 19:32 – “You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the L ORD.” Elder

 V.2 “appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush”  V.5 “…the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”  V.7 “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt…”  V.8 “…I have come down to deliver them…”  V.10 “…I will send you to Pharaoh…”  V.14 The Great I AM  V.16 “Go and gather the elders of Israel…”  V.18 “…you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; and now, please let us go”  V.18 “…you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The L ORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us; and now, please let us go” Exodus 3

 11 Moses said to the, “Why have you dealt ill with your servant? And why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me?....”  11 Moses said to the L ORD, “Why have you dealt ill with your servant? And why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me?....”  14 ” I am not able to carry all this people alone; the burden is too heavy for me. “  16 The said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people.”  16 The L ORD said to Moses: “Bring me seventy of Israel’s elders who are known to you as leaders and officials among the people.” Number 11

1. These 70 elders did not replace Moses. Moses was still needed. 2. These 70 did not rule over Moses. God did not appoint these 70 men to tell Moses what to do or how to lead the nation of Israel. -They were not there to tell him what decisions to make or how to make them or approve his decisions. -That is NOT why they were appointed. The 70 Elders Give Context for Church Leadership

3. The 70 were appointed to help Moses be more effective as a leader. 4. These 70 were appointed to care for the people. -They were NOT appointed to chart a way through the wilderness. -They were not appointed to figure out a budget for the nation of Israel. -They were not appointed to figure out who was going to do what. -They were appointed to shoulder the burden of caring for the people. 5. These 70 were appointed by Moses. Moses did not ask the nation of Israel to submit names of people to serve. God told Moses, “you choose”. The 70 Elders Give Context for Church Leadership

 Known as “The Assembly of Elders”  Not a place of worship  Fellowship Center, Community Life Center  A place to be reminded of their beliefs and values, SO THEY WOULD NOT LOSE THEIR IDENTITY IN A PAGAN CULTURE. Synagogue

 Biblical Leaders Today:  Don’t get assimilated into the culture, fall into captivity, and lose your unique identity in Christ. Why is this Important?
