Railway safety Railway lines can often be found running through the countryside. Like roads these can be extremely dangerous and there are some important safety tips you should know to help stay safe around them.

LOOK both ways to make sure nothing is coming. LISTEN carefully before you cross. Continue to look both ways when you’re crossing.

Railway safety Electrification Why should you not go near railway lines? Railway lines and the overhead cables always have electricity flowing at all times, it is never switched off. The ‘third rail’ looks like a normal railway rail, but is electrified. Rubber soled shoes will not protect from the electricity Electricity in over headlines can ‘jump’. If you fly a kite or dangle things from bridges near the overhead power the electricity can jump up to 3 metres

Railway safety Trespass and vandalism Trespassing on the railway can have tragic consequences. Vandalism is when someone deliberately damages railway property. Trains produce powerful wind that can drag somebody standing next to the tracks under the wheels of the train. If you are on the track you are always at risk from trains and high voltage electricity. Putting objects on the track can cause an accident. Even a small object can derail a train.
