The Big 8 Ability The physical or mental capacity to do something. Examples: Able bodied, able minded, person with disability (cognitive, physical, emotional, bio-chemical, etc.)

Age How old you are and what stage of life you are in. The Big 8 Examples: Child, Young adult, Middle Age Adult, Elderly

Ethnicity Relates to a person or to a large group of people who share a national, cultural, and/or linguistic heritage, regardless of whether or not they reside in their countries of origin. The Big 8 Examples: Irish American, Japanese American, Italian, Samoan, Multiethnic

Race A group that is socially defined, but on the basis of physical criteria including skin color and facial features. Examples: White, Black, Asian, Pacific Islander, Multiracial The Big 8

Gender Gender is an individual’s innermost sense of self as “male/masculine,” “female/feminine,” somewhere in between on the gender spectrum, or somewhere outside of these gender boundaries. Gender is a social construction of how we as a society view one’s attitude and physical presentation. Examples: Woman, Man, Transgender, Genderqueer, Gender Non-conforming The Big 8

Body Image & Size Perception of an individual based on their weight, height, and/or physical characteristics. The Big 8 Examples: Tall, Short, Big Frame, Small Frame, Curly Hair, Straight Hair, Freckles, Color of Hair, Size of Muscles, etc.

Religion/Spirituality An institutionalized and/or personal set of beliefs and/or practices relating to the divine/divinities, nature, and/or self. Examples: Christian, Jewish, Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, Wiccan, Buddhist, Agnostic, Atheist, Sikh The Big 8

Sexual Orientation Sexual and/or romantic attraction toward people based on one’s own gender identity and the gender identity of the person or people to which they are attracted. Examples: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, Pansexual, Asexual, Heterosexual The Big 8

Socioeconomic Status (Social Class) Social standing based on one’s income and/or position in society. Examples: Poor, Working, Lower-Middle, Middle, Upper- Middle, Wealthy
