/ Instant Messaging Ways of sending messages over the Internet Usually written very casually between friends When used for business, avoid casual language; use business letter-type phrasing

Forms / Applications You will be called upon to fill out forms many times throughout your life. Forms and applications are used to get such things as: ▫library cards ▫drivers licenses ▫bank accounts ▫club memberships ▫jobs Always write neatly on forms and applications.

Formula Poetry Poetry that follows specific patterns or guidelines ▫I Am ▫Haiku ▫Diamante ▫Cinquain

Letters / Notes Business Letters—used in professional situations Personal Letters—used to communicate with family and friends. Some examples of personal letters are: ▫Invitations ▫Thank-you notes

Invitations You write an invitation to ask someone to an event. They should include the following specific information about the occasion: ▫type of event ▫time ▫place ▫any other information your guests might need to know (how to dress, what to bring, etc.)

Menus Restaurant menus are written to provide patrons information, such as ingredients and prices. Dinner party menus are written to make your guests more comfortable. Prices should not be included on a dinner party menu.

Seating Charts When hosting a dinner party, the objective may be to provide your guests an opportunity to meet new people. A seating chart, planned in advance by the host, places guests at tables with both people they do know and people they do not know. This keeps your party lively, as everyone gets the opportunity to meet new people.
