LESSON 9 PACKAGING 包装

AIMS AND REQUIREMENTS  To know the most generally used ways of packing;  To master the usual expressions of packing requirements;  To grasp the sentences of Presenting Packing and Packing Materials.

Ⅰ. Useful Expressions A. Labels and Units  1) According to our regulations, only two languages can be used on the labels.  2) Some foreign language descriptions on the labels of Chinese goods are printed with poor grammar and spelling mistakes.  3) The net weight must be printed on the label in a type of required size.  4) The bicycles will be packed in strong but lightweight crates of 1 meter long, 0.8 meter wide.  5) The dimensions of the carton are 17 cm high, 30 cm wide and 50 cm long. The volume is about cubic meter.

B. Type of Packing  1) The leather shoes are packed in boxes, each pair in a box, ten boxes into a big case which is durable and easy to carry.  2) The outer packing is marked with “Fragile”, “Use on hook ” and “Do not drop ”.  3) On the outer packing, we will mark our initials WPD in a diamond under which the port of destination and the order number.  4) All the cartons are lined with plastic sheets, so they are absolutely waterproof.  5) We don’t think the cardboard boxes are strong enough for ocean transportation.

c. Presenting Packing & Packing Materials  1) Packing is as important as the quality of the products.  2) A well –designed package can catch customer’s eyes and help promote the goods.  3) Transparent packing gives the consumer a clear view of the graceful shape and beautiful colors of the goods.  4) Inside the box is fixed with hard foamed padding and lined with velvet.  5) The necklace is placed in a satin-covered mall box lined with beautiful silk ribbon.

Ⅱ. Dialogue Mr. Smith, the buyer, is having a discussion with Ms. Li, the seller, on the labeling of the goods.  S: I’d like to talk something about the labels of the goods.  L: Did you find any problems with the labels?  S: Yes, you know our country has regulations on the import of food products. They have been so rigid & complicated that they really bring us importers a lot of troubles.  L: You are right. Have you any suggestions or requirements on the present labels?  S: According to our regulations, only two languages can be used on the labels. Since there are two display panels on the labels, one can be in English and the other is in Chinese.  L: You mean the German description on the present labels should be deleted, don’t you?

 S: Yes. The net weight must be printed in a type of required size, one-eighth of an inch minimum, and placed in the lower 30% of the panel.  L: How about the wording of the information?  S: Please pay attention to grammar and spelling. As far as I know, some foreign language descriptions on the labels of Chinese goods are printed with poor grammar and spelling mistakes.  L: I can assure you that we don’t have these problems. Do you have any other suggestions?  S: No, maybe the background color should be a little lighter.  L: OK, we will pass them on to the manufacturers.  S: Oh, by the way, can the canned food be packed in smaller cartons of 0.7m height, 0.9m length and 0.4m width for display in supermarkets?  L: Yes. If there is anything we can do for you, just let us know.  S: OK, thanks.

Now Mr. Smith, the buyer, is discussing the outer packing with the seller, Ms. Li.  S: May I ask how you will pack our goods?  L: We have standard packing for export. First, each item will be individually packed in a poly bag. Then, we put each 10 items into one wooden case.  S: Will the wooden case be put into the container directly?  L: Yes.  S: How about dampness or moisture protection? Dampness or moisture may cause damage during the transportation.  L: Well, each wooden case will be lined with plastic sheets from inside. So no claim of damage caused by dampness.

 S: I am glad to hear that. Is the wooden case strong enough for transportation?  L: You can rest assured of that.  S: Oh, do you have the mark of “Keep Dry” on the wooden cases?  L: Sure. Along with “Upward” and “Handle with Care”.  S: Good. Could you please mark our initials in a diamond under which the port of destination and the order number on the outer packing?  L: No problem.  S: One more question, how is your shockproof packing?  L: We have shockproof cardboards in wooden cases. The safety of packing is something we always pay much attention to.  S: That’s fine.

Besides, cartons are light in weight and easy to handle. / We can reinforce the cartons with straps. / The goods will have to go a long way. What if dampness gets into the package? / The way of packing has been widely accepted by our customers.
