Descriptions of Plagiarism The author lists several reasons why students cheat. The two most familiar are the following: 1. Finding the shortest route possible to get assignments done. 2. Students are faced with many choices so they sacrifice their low priorities to get other things done. These unacceptable behaviors can be reduced or eliminated by: a. Explain to them what plagiarism is and give them the consequences of plagiarism. b. Change up different components of each paper so they can’t copy papers from other students or find papers online. Retrieved from Robert Harris, 10/2/2016Darren Keyton EDU 290

Forms of Plagiarism Three forms of plagiarism are: 1.Buying and essay off of somebody 2.Use another students paper and putting your name on it 3.Having someone else do your work How to detect each type of plagiarism: Mixed Citations, lack of quotes and references, unusual formatting, and off topic 10/2/2016Darren Keyton EDU 290

Important Points for Students A definition of plagiarism is taking someone's words or idea and making them your own and not giving them credit. The best three discussion points are (List the names or concept.) – A Discuss the benefits of citing sources – B Educate students about plagiarism – C Make penalties clear 10/2/2016Darren Keyton EDU 290

Benefits Derived from Discussion Points Students will learn about plagiarism and learn why it is wrong and give them the penalty for plagiarizing. Also understanding why citing sources makes papers much stronger. 10/2/2016Darren Keyton EDU 290

Discuss Benefits of Citing Sources When citing sources on a paper it makes the paper stronger because it shows that they have researched the material. When using creditable sources that support the paper it makes it even stronger. 10/2/2016Darren Keyton EDU 290

Educate Students About Plagiarism When letting students know about plagiarism it lets them understand the major penalties that it can cause. When they know the penalties of plagiarism students will think twice about doing it. 10/2/2016Darren Keyton EDU 290

Make Penalties Clear When talking about plagiarism talk to them about the consequences that will be given from the teacher as well as the schools policy. 10/2/2016Darren Keyton EDU 290

Prevention Techniques Be clear on the assignments: Give them expectations of each assignment and show examples. Provide specific topics: Give them certain topics to write upon and if student has one it needs to be clarified through you. Require steps for the paper: Give dates due for a rough draft, pure edits, etc… References must be up to date: Require the researched material to be within the past couple years. 10/2/2016Darren Keyton EDU 290

How to Detect Plagiarism Use a plagiarism detection: Look up a plagiarism detection site online and search the title of the paper Look for clues: Look to see if the citations are different or out of order and see the formatting of the document is right. Plagiarism DetectionLook for Clues Type in Plagiarism.com and insert the paper to be detected. 1.MLA format for a citation 2. APA format for a citation 10/2/2016Darren Keyton EDU 290

References Read the articles listed below on plagiarism, found in Wilson Select Plus e- library. In the Curbing cheating it talked about how students cheat but they believe in have good moral character. It also gives percentages of how many students actually cheat on school work and tests. The three things that benefit me from this is that how much students actually cheat and how as a teacher we need to be looking for the cheating and checking. As a teacher it is important to actually give assignments that are worth doing and not giving students busy work. The third thing that I got out of this is that promoting integrity is more important and is said to be more beneficial. 1.I believe that they students are right that when you submit things to an online source a lot of hits will come up with certain words that are being used over and over again. I also believe that submitting things to an online source wont work because it will be able to find a lot of things online about certain subjects. However I believe that most students cheat a lot on assignments and tests because they got other things on there mind. McCabe, Don, and Daniel Katz. "Education Digest."
