Presentation transcript:

Most of PGHS issues have surrounded the inappropriate (naïve) use of Twitter, Ask FM, Instagram and Facebook… Public/private spheres?! 14 going on 25… Jumping on the bandwagon/bullying … Isolation/loneliness Self-esteem/self-image issues/self harm… Sleep deprivation! Grooming

You are part of the group both age and sex who tweet the most. Around the world 50 million teenage girls regularly post tweets.

A typical Twitter user… First impressions? Paris Brown, aged 17 Britain’s first Youth Crime Commissioner (appointed by Kent Police Force) Salary of £15,000 a year (and use of a car) She beat 164 people to get the job!

Why the tears? Before getting the job, Paris had tweeted a few things she would later regret…

Paris Brown is not alone: A survey carried out on 3000 tweeters found… 90% of tweeter users had regretted posting at least one tweet. Overall, a third of all tweeter posts are regretted. A quarter of all tweeter posts are deleted within 2 days. A majority of tweeters admitted they would say, or have said, something online that they would never say to a person’s face.

A great way to keep in touch with family and friends (and celebs?!) A way of getting your point of view across on all sorts of current issues and events Increasing the political engagement of young people (Arab Spring) To be handled with care… The short nature of tweets increases the chance of misunderstanding It’s highly addictive (what are you NOT doing instead?) Tweets often stay online for a very long time You don’t know who’s going to read your tweets… future employers/universities, criminal gangs, paedophiles! The police can take action if you post offensive comments on twitter. Some twitter users have been sued for making defamatory tweets.

Here’s what you’re tweeting… The older Justin Bieber gets, the more I fancy him I love expressing how I feel on twitter, and not caring what other people think omg they have been writing our school reports before easter... u think ur beautiful when ur caked in make up, have ur hair extensions and ur slutty cloths, but when u have no makeup on u think ew. I waste the holidays doing nothing “sigh”
