Self-Control  Describes one who has mastered his desires and actions.  Rather than being ruled by his emotions and desires, he controls them.  Self-discipline, temperance, moderation, sobriety, etc.

Self-Control  Needed in all that we do!  Every sin involves self-control. Broken homes, relationships, neglected responsibilities, mediocrity.  Personal disasters – addictions, poor health, tongue control, disorderliness, etc.

Self-Control  Vital to a pure heart!  It will determine our spiritual growth, how we use our time, how we handle conflict, etc..  No self-control – poor Bible study and prayer habits, poor attendance and tardiness, problems with brethren, attitude toward worship, etc.

Self-Control  2 Pet. 1:6 – after “knowledge” in our pattern of growth – “temperance”  Galatians 5:23 – a “fruit of the Spirit”

Self-Control  A quality of leaders in the church  1 Tim. 3:2 - Elders 1 Tim. 3:8-13 – Deacons; 1 Tim. 4:12-16 – preachers, 1 Tim. 3:11 – wives of leaders

Self-Control  1 Cor. 9:25-27 – both athletes and Paul!

Self-Control  We MUST control our lives.  Too many today fail to take responsibility!  Don’t let someone else determine your eternal destiny! Romans 14:10-12  Can you turn to your brethren for help? James 5:16, Galatians 6:2

Self-Control  HOW does one learn self-control?  It is a determined mindset! You have to make up your mind!  Realize the consequences of your decisions. Both good and bad! Luke 9:23

Self-Control  HOW does one learn self-control?  Make yourself do what you need to do! Cf. 1 Cor. 9:25-27  Pray for wisdom and strength Jas. 1:5-7, 1 Pet. 5:6-7  Know what your ultimate goal is – Heb. 12:1-2, Phil. 3:12-14

Humility  “To make low”  One of a meek and lowly disposition. Non-abrasive in dealing with others.  “Strength under control!”  The opposite of arrogance and pride  Meekness, modesty, lowliness, a servant, etc.

Humility  John the Baptist, cf. Jn. 1:35-37, 3:30 “He must increase, but I must decrease.”  Jesus, Phil. 2:5-8, John 13:1-9 – washing the disciple's feet

Humility Matthew 5:3,5, ““Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven… 5:5, Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth.”

Humility  Phil. 2:3-4, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

Humility Rom. 12:3, “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.”

Humility  1 Pet. 5:5-7, “Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”

Humility How to develop humility  Realize that you are ALWAYS in the presence of God  Be thankful  Overcome worldliness, Matt. 19:16-22

Humility How to develop humility  Do something that will humble you – be a servant! ( cf. 2 Cor. 4:5-7 )  Associate with the humble, Rom. 12:16

Patience  “Bearing pains and trials calmly or without complaint. Manifesting forbearance under provocation or strain Not hasty or impetuous Steadfast despite opposition, difficulty or adversity.

Patience  ( ὑ πομονή, hupomone) “The capacity to continue to bear up under difficult circumstances. Not hasty or impetuous” (L&N)  Perseverance, forbearance, endurance, long-suffering, etc.

Patience  While seeking to maintain a pure heart, you will face difficulties. You need patience.  2 Peter 1:5-7 – after temperance with our virtue

Patience  The patience of God  2 Peter 3:9  Romans 15:5

Patience  Patience needed to develop faith! Strong faith doesn’t happen overnight!  Lack of patience does great damage in our lives Frustration, anger, lost tempers, debt, giving up and quitting, etc.
