Spiritual Disciplines for Disciples Jimmie Handley and Doris Batey January 24, 2015

Define Spiritual Define Discipline

“ Spiritual Disciplines are exercises that one engages in habitually, or which brings one closer to God and thus become more godly in character and behavior.”

“The Spiritual Disciplines are those personal and corporate disciplines that promote spiritual growth.” D.S. Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, 1991 NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO

We must “discipline₁; exercise₂; train₃; {cultivate piety—seek to become more holy₄;}” ourselves, for the purpose of godliness.

As disciples, we must engage in “spiritual exercises or disciplines” to develop godliness.

“The Spirituals Disciplines are the God-given means we are to use in the Spirit-filled pursuit of Godliness.” D. S. Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, 1991 NavPress, Colorado Springs, CO.

“Godly people are disciplined people.”

Think of Spiritual Disciplines as spiritual exercises—physical disciplines promote strength; Spiritual Disciplines promote Godliness. D. S. Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life

“God uses three primary catalysts for changing and conforming us to Christlikeness—

PEOPLE CIRCUMSTANCES and SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES” D. S. Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life
