S570: Session 4: Research Design: 20 Different Kinds of Studies

Goals for Today Overall Goals Understand different models/possibilities for research design More specifically Understanding: Understand 20 different possible research designs Application: Research design challenge #2 Reflection: Consider how these possibilities might inform your own research (flows into 3 proposals assignment)

Plan Discussion: The pluralism of possibilities for ed research including Luttrell, Phillips, and Maxwell (10:10 – 11:00) Mini-lecture – 20 different kinds of studies (11:00 – 11:20) Application: Research design challenge #2 (11:30 – 12:30) Reflection: Consider how experience with research challenge informs possibilities for own research (12:30 – 1:00)

Key Components of Research Design Question: What question are you asking? Sampling: What units are you going to measure/observe? Categorization: How are you going to categorize the data? Internal validity: What kind of inferences can you draw from the data? Is there a gap between the data you draw upon and the conclusion you reach? External validity: Does what you conclude on the basis of these data speak to the larger phenomena?
