Beanbucks

From the bean to the cup : Supply chain of coffee ! Growers: Working on small plots of land 1-2 hectares. Intermediaries: Transport or sell coffee to a processor Processors: Individual farmers or co-op’s who covert the cherries into green coffee beans Roasters: Turn the green coffee beans into a product e.g.: Nestle, Kraft, P & G. Add value to the product through marketing, branding and packaging. Government agencies: In some counties the government controls the coffee trade by buying the coffee at a fixed price. They sell it at an auction for export. Exporters: Buy from auctions and then sell to dealers. Dealers/Brokers: Supply the coffee beans to the roasters at a price acceptable to the buyer and seller Retailers: Seller of coffee products. Large supermarkets to small independent retailers.

Fair trade coffee supply chain Retailer / café: Sells the coffee at a higher price. Fair trade distributor: Coffee importers and rosters must sign a licensing agreement in order to sell fair trade. Roasters must pay a fee of 10c per pound to ensure the sustainability of the system. Co-op: Farmers are organized into co-operatives. The fair payment for there crops are invested into food, shelter, health care and education. Grower: Ensured a minimum price for their coffee – $ 1.26 per pound

Survey results: Average price for flat white: $4.00 Average price for a g bag of beans: $13.30

Where does the money go?

The coffee chain game: 5 groups of 6 people Each group needs a role card In your groups read through the role card Think about: - How do you feel about it? - What sort of problems do you think you might face? - What strengths do you have as a group?

If this packet of instant coffee costs $ 5.40 How much of the selling price should your group get? (think about the work you have to do)
