Bump it Up Be sure to restate the question as part of the answer. Instead of “I look for loyalty.” Say, “When choosing friends, a quality I particularly look for is loyalty.” Or, “Loyalty is the quality I look for most when choosing friends.” Read your answer out loud, but inside your head. Look at each word. Pause only where there are commas or periods. Does it sound right? Did you leave out words? Do you need to insert a comma or question mark? Check, are the first words of all sentences capitalized? Did you also use capitals for proper nouns? Add examples, elaboration, evidence, or extra information that supports your answer. Be sure each extra you add relates directly to the question. Use signal words such as for example or one way. Does your work meet the criteria for length and depth? Reread the instructions. Have you done the job? Check your presentation. Is your work neatly typed, printed with appropriate lowercase and capitals, or written in cursive? Is the spacing inviting to a reader? Are sketches, color, bold words, highlighting, titles, or headings used to aide in understanding?

SEM-R (School-Wide Enrichment Model Reading) (SEM-R) is an enrichment-based reading program designed to: Stimulate interest in and enjoyment of reading Promote and develop higher reading achievement Improve self-regulation and automaticity in reading Encourage students to select high-interest books that are slightly to moderately above their current reading levels Create independent, lifelong readers Encourages to read a variety of genres (for example: poetry anthology, fantasy, mystery, realistic fiction, informational, and biography/autobiography/memoir) Books must be in class each day, though can be taken home Teachers will formally check in with students every two weeks The SEM-R notebook is a large part of students grades The public library is a great resource to supplement the books we have in class Students will be assigned one book commercial per semester

Philosophy of the Program Handbook Online Contract (grades) Students can ONLY retake end-of-unit tests, which are not open book, where they score 79% or below. Retakes will not impact the grade beyond an 80%. HW/Planner/Communication/Homework pass Homeside Activities

History Day Every year students’ research within a historical theme. This year’s theme is Taking a Stand in History. 5 th graders will create poster displays related to this theme, which will be modeled and worked on in class and at home.
