Universal Systems of Technology The “DEAL” System Universal Systems Resources of Technology

The Deal System Deal is an acronym for a problem solving method. D efine the problem E xplore all possible solution A ct on the best solution L ook back and evaluate the results

D efine the problem- Write out the problem clearly as a “Design Brief” Design Brief – “A written plan that identifies a problem to be solved, its criteria, and its constraints. The design brief is used to encourage thinking of all aspects of a problem before attempting a solution.” (R1 pg 237)

E xplore all possible solution- Do not discount possible solutions. Brainstorming “A method of shared problem solving in which all members of a group spontaneously and in a unrestrained discussion generate ideas. (R1 pg 236) “In searching for the best solution, the designer redesigns, tests, refines, and remodels again and again.” (R1 p.97)

A ct on the best solution- Choose a solution that you think will work best. Put the plan into action.

L ook back and evaluate the results- Observe the process and the actual results. Does the solution need to be modified or another solution selected.

Input Capital Information Finances The ideas and activities that helps us determine what we want to accomplish.

Process The conversion of your ideas through the use of the 7 resources into useful products.

Output The result of the system. Desired: goods Undesired: pollution

Feedback- Provides information about the quality of what is being produced Monitoring the system using gauges, displays, and sensors to do. Monitoring the systems making changes as needed.

Resources of Technology Humans Information Capital Materials Tools & Machines Energy Time

Describing Resources People- People are the creators of technology and use the other resources that have been around billions of years, to create technology. Information- Technology requires information. it is use of that information that helps us to meet our needs and wants. Capital- Any form of wealth is capital. Capital is barter, money, credit, or property.

Resources Cont. Materials- Materials are the goods that we develop into products. Tools and Machines- Tools include hand tools and machines. Energy- Energy is the source of power for all of our technology systems. Time- Since the industrial era, time has been measured in hours, minutes and seconds. Our forefathers measured time the setting and rising of the sun. We now measure time in nanoseconds (billionths of a second).
