AGENDA INTRODUCTIONS ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING FINDING A SUPPORTIVE DOCTOR HANDLING CONCERNED LOVED ONES
INTRODUCTIONS WHY ARE WE HERE? – To be supportive (cheerleaders not coaches) – We don’t want to tell you what to do, we are here to help & give info MARY RYDER PAM REDMON
ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING! 1 ST – you have a choice to make – Decide whether or not you are going to beat this. Cancer is survivable – tumors are natural defense Cancer is a wakeup call – why did you become cancer-producer not cancer-fighter? Strap into this Cancer Coaster – it is a marathon and not a sprint One day (moment) at a time
ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING! Replace negative thoughts with positive ones – DON’T – “I’m going to die if I don’t do chemotherapy like my doctor says. I have no control over my life.” – DO – “Having cancer is a wakeup call, and I need to treat my body differently. Cancer is my body telling me an imbalance needs to be corrected. I am learning how to be kind to my body by giving it the right nutrition, detoxing it from the bad stuff I’ve been giving it all these years and learning to let go of negative emotions are ways that will support my healing. “ What is your empowerment statement? – write it down Visualization – be supportive Take back you POWER!
FINDING A SUPPORTIVE DOCTOR Do your research and ask around and look at referrals and reviews before you just get the next doctor up (You don’t want a QUACK!) Read through the questions that we have as reference (Chris Wark 20 Questions) and write down which ones you want to ask Ask if you can record your discussions to remember everything Keep a binder of everything your receive
FINDING A SUPPORTIVE DOCTOR Set the expectation of what you want upfront Get all contact numbers for doctor, PA, nurse (especially who to call after hours) Let the doctor know that Hope is a huge part of your healing, and that you need to ensure that the doctor is on-board with that. You don’t expect false-hope, but you don’t need Doom & Gloom. Tell him/her that you understand that they see cancer each and every day, but this is new to you. Ask the doctor to read your chart and look over your labs & scan results prior to entering your room for meeting, so they are prepared and know all of your information. (you have already waited, it is worth waiting longer)
HANDLING CONCERNED LOVED ONES! You don’t owe anyone an explanation of your choice of healing! – You are empowered by knowing that your body heals through nutrition, detox, healthy thinking & other alternative therapies People want to help, but do they? – You may have people who were your closest friends who don’t know how to deal with this. It is scary for them, and they don’t want to say the wrong thing. – Silence is the worst thing that can happen – it makes you feel as though you are on an island (you already don’t feel “normal” ) – You will have people who are not as close who will step up! How are you going to choose your Village? – Supportive & Not judgmental – Understands that your “new normal” means that you can’t commit to doing anything sometimes hours in advance!
ACTION STEPS 1. Write down 3 attitudes or beliefs that are hampering your healing and shift them to positive beliefs 2. Use these to help you put together a empowerment statement that you say each and every day multiple times to help you get through tough times. 3. What is you goal for this month? How are you going to achieve it?
