Unit 1 Investigation V Warm-up – What type of bonding does this picture represent? – What do you think will happen to the charge on each atom?

What are Valence Electrons? Valence Electrons are the electrons that occur on the outermost shell of an atom. This can be determined by the group number. All elements in the same group will have the same valence electrons.

What are Core Electrons Core electrons are going to be all of the electrons found on all the remaining shells. How many Core Electrons does each element have? How many Valence?

Unit 1 Investigation V What happens when atoms bond? 1.Atoms can gain or lose electrons when they bond (covalent, ionic or metallic) 2.When this happens the atom is called an ion because it will have a charge. (positive or negative)

With your partner Create Ion Cards for each assigned element – Partner to the left- H and Period 2 – Partner to the right He and Period 3 Each card needs- Element name, Symbol, Atomic #, Bohr model (with proton and neutron number written in center) A line showing if they are going to lose or gain and electron What the electron configuration will be

Go Fish With your group- – Using your ion cards, make as many noble gas matches as you can. (Yes, you can use a noble gas singlely) – At the end write down all of your matches- Did you notice any patterns? What types of bonds did you make?
