SFX & St Julie’s Staff are available this evening for questions and queries.

YEAR 6 SATS

What are the SATs? Standardised Attainment Tests set by the Government. Testing two of the core subjects: English, Maths.

Changes to key stage 2 national curriculum assessment The English test will test grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS). During the year we will also use Teacher Assessment from writing to give an overall grade in Writing. The Writing grade is not the official SAT result but will help to inform secondary schools.

SATs Weeks 2016 Monday 9 th May – Thursday 12 th May (Provisional Dates) Please don’t book any holidays or medical appointments in these weeks. All tests take place in the morning session. Currently there are no ‘extension’ papers.

Science Science will not be reported at school level. Science will be teacher assessed in school. Science pupil-level sampling will take place from May 2016.

Attendance A very good attendance record is essential to maintain good progress throughout Y6. Many topics are taught once and not revisited due to the amount of work needed to be covered in Year 6. Homework tasks must be completed when set to ‘keep on top’ of the workload. Any problems – please speak to any of the Year 5/6 team. (Mrs Kinsella, Mr Morris, Mr Heery & Mrs Quirk)

Homework Homework is given to support the learning that takes place in class. It also teaches the children to be self- disciplined and to realise their potential they must put in the extra effort that homework requires.

Homework We need your active support with homework. Please see the Upper Key Stage 2 Parent/Carer information. Please help your child create a calm working environment and a regular time to complete homework in.

Year 5/6 Homework Schedule MONTUEWEDTHURFRI English or Maths (Hand in on Wed) Learning Spelling & Tables English or Maths (Hand in on Fri) Learning Spelling & Tables English or Maths (Hand in on Mon) 20 Minutes Reading 20 Minutes Reading

Practice SATs in school We use past SATs papers to test progress throughout Year 6 and to familiarise the children with the format of the paper and the timings. We have received samples of the new 2016 SATS. Please avoid using this paper as it will give a false indicator to your child’s progress.

How will the new SATS paper be scored? It is expected nationally that the majority of 11 year old children will achieve a recognised standard suitable for the end of key stage 2. The actual grade boundary of whether your child will meet the standard/or not meet the standard has not been released. This will not be released until June 2016 after the first ‘live’ tests of the new testing framework.

Support during tests Children who have Individual Education Plans (Learning Journeys) are able to have all tests apart from English Reading test read to them. All children are able to ask staff to read but not explain questions to them (apart from English reading test). If children are unsure they must ask as many times as they like.

SATs Tests ENGLISH Reading 1 hour reading Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation 45 minutes.

SATs Tests MATHS -Paper 1 Mental Arithmetic – 30mins -Paper 2 – Reasoning no calculator 40mins -Paper 3 – Reasoning no calculator 40mins Show your working out you might get a mark There has been some confusion over this in the Practice SATs The working out has to be the correct method to gain the mark.

SATs Week & Practice SATs The nights before the tests: Pack bag & Early to bed! On the days: -Relax ! -Have a good breakfast -Arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of school.

On the day of the SATs Last year we provided a successful breakfast club to help settle the children. School will provide all equipment.

Teacher Assessment Based on child’s progress throughout the year in lessons and tests. Official documents: -Passed on to DfE (Government) -Given to secondary schools (IN JULY – LEVELS DO NOT AFFECT ADMISSION TO SECONDARY SCHOOL) Y6 teachers have transition meetings with St Julie’s and SFX Staff in July & liaise with other secondary schools as necessary.

Results Results received by school in July. Test results and Teacher Assessment Results reported to parents. Also passed on to secondary schools. (LEVELS DO NOT AFFECT ADMISSION TO SECONDARY SCHOOL)

Parental support Please check reading diary daily – encourage children to complete what they have to do and make any comments of success and any problems too. Reading record – completed daily by the children and signed once a week. Encourage children to complete and make comments on their reading also. Please record all reading – not just the school reading books. It is good for children to read a range of books/genres.

Spelling Spelling has changed this year. We will still send out a termly spelling list. However there will not be any formal tests at the end of the week but will form part of the daily English lesson.

Any Questions? Individual questions may be brought up with your child’s teacher. Individual targets will be discussed at Parents’ Evenings Tuesday 3 rd November and 4 th November 2016.

Thank you for your on going support!
