Managing your time - Perspectives Key Study Skills: ▫Knowing how long it takes you to do something ▫Avoiding running out of time “Consciously increase your awareness of time and the amount of time different things take, in order to improve your planning.” (Turner, J. (2002) How to Study. London: Sage) Karen Phethean University of Winchester January

How long does it take you to ???… Read a book with 10 chapters Read one chapter in a book, say pages Take notes from one chapter Clear a space on your desk so you can work comfortably Sharpen your pencils, get paper together, find a bookmark for your book, …. Mind map Write the first draft of an essay Get started writing for an essay Read through your notes before starting to write an essay Read through and revise your writing Surf the net (adapted from Turner, 2002) Karen Phethean University of Winchester January

Procrastination is the thief of time (Edward Young,1683 – 1765) Switching between too many different tasks too frequently Talking rather than doing Spending too long on presentational elements. Doing low priority work over more important. Karen Phethean University of Winchester January

The 3 Ps of study survival strategies Pace - being realistic and honest Planning – being committed and organised Prioritising – being aware and calm. Karen Phethean University of Winchester January

Planning Diaries and Student Planners Put in key dates – work backwards from these to place in deadlines Number the weeks – so you have a sense of time available and progress Timetables Useful to break tasks down into smaller more manageable parts Space tasks and allocate time effectively – e.g. work in the morning, time off in the evening – link to how you as an individual work. Karen Phethean University of Winchester January

Listing and Prioritising Urgent and Important Important but not urgent Urgent but Not Important Neither urgent nor important Karen Phethean University of Winchester January Urgency – demand immediate attention / length of time before a task MUST be completed Importance - help to achieve long term goal / benefits of completing a task against the loss if the task is not completed Think of 2 things that you would place in these boxes for today/ tomorrow/ next week. Use this to timetable what you will do when. What about time for reflection?

Good study habits: Do important work when you are at your most productive Make the most of small scraps to time Keep documents organised Have a plan Extend your working day – do you make the most of all of the morning? Karen Phethean University of Winchester January

10 tips for good academic study (adapted from McMillan & Wyers (2011) – The Study Skills Book) 1.Have a good / positive study environment – be tidy, reduce noise - music; escape – avoid interruptions. 2.Avoid distractions – texts/ s / TV/ computer games / chatting / shopping 3.Work in short bursts – have breaks 4.Find a way to start 5.Be positive 6.You don’t need to be linear! 7.Break tasks down into manageable “chunks” 8.Peer support 9.Seek support – ask for help 10.What is perfection?
