Disclaimer I am not a fitness expert, nor am I am board certified physician. However I am an individual that is passionate about general fitness and health I enjoy sharing the knowledge I have acquired over the years, hopefully you will learn from some of the mistakes I have made.

Background Attended University of South Alabama graduated in 2004 Co-owner of a computer repair/ networking company (P&S Computer Services) Began working at USA Health System 2004 – 2007 Worked at USA Library Systems

All of the companies I listed have 1 thing in common. They allowed me to become lazy by sitting down all day. As IT Professionals our work is mostly in a sedentary environment Along with this comes (employee breakfasts, lunch with coworkers, beers after work with coworkers) *Speaking in general*

Factiod As people began to focus more on their careers, they tend to focus less on their health and their well being. 1 to 1 relationship between worked related stress and weight gain More than 1/3 of U.S. Adults are obese Source: Journal of American Medicine The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in 2008 was $147 Source:CDC

Why are we discussing health at a technical meet up ???? No matter how good of a developer you are, if you don’t take care of yourself you won’t be able to ship code. Also if you are missing work because of a health condition you are costing your company $$$ Lower Output because of missed days

Why is he telling is this

So how do we get there?? F.E.N.

Fitness/ Exercise

Fitness Exercise at least 30 – 45 minutes 4-5 days a week Add in some resistance/ weight training Take a break from work, try to get up and move around every hour I personally have incorporated sitting and standing at work I personally like Crossfit, but there are several other fitness programs you can follow

Education

Just like you would research a new technology, research the things that you are putting into your body In essence read the labels

Nutrition

Nutrition Do`s Eat fresh fruits and vegetables Eat some nuts and seeds Eat highly quality protein Track what you eat ( I use My Fitness Pal, a spreadsheet works well also) Limit intake of sugar filled drinks and beverages

Nutrition Do`s Food Prep is Key

Nutrition Don’ts Eat Processed Foods (lunch meats Limit the amount of junk food you eat

Set “small”measureable goals What does this mean ??? Instead of saying “I want to lose 30 lbs” Work towards losing a pound per week for n weeks until you reach your goal
