Ways of expressing the future  Future Simple  be going to  Present Continuous  Present Simple  Future Continuous  Future Perfect  is to / are to  about to / due to

Future Simple  Future Simple is used when we want to make predictions or an assumption about the future. (I think /expect / hope…. I’m sure… probably / perhaps …) You worked hard last year. I hope you will pass the examination

Future Simple  It is used to make a sudden decision, an offer, a threat, a promise. “It is raining!” – “I’ll lend you my umbrella.”  We use Future Simple to describe facts in the future. Patrick will be twenty-four next Thursday.

Future Simple  We use Future Simple + Present Simple in conditional sentences (type I) and time clauses (when, as soon as, after, until, unless, before) If you book your flight early, you’ll get it cheaper. I will telephone you as soon as I arrive.

be going to  be going to is used to express a personal intention. I am going to watch the football match tonight.  to show that something will very probably happen because there are already signs of happening. “Look at those black clouds! It’s going to rain.”

Present Continuous  Present Continuous (am/is/are V+ing) is used for planned or personally scheduled events. Usually used with principle verbs such as : come, go, begin, start, finish, have, etc. We are flying to London on Monday. She is coming tomorrow afternoon.

Present Simple  Present Simple (V, Vs) is used when we are thinking of certain future, something already arranged as a timetable or programme. Our train leaves in 20 minutes. The plane takes off at 6.

Future Continuous  Future Continuous (will be V+ing) is used when an action or an event will be in progress at a point of time in the future. It emphasizes that that no arrangement is necessary. This time on Sunday I will be flying to Dublin.

Future Perfect  Future Perfect (have/has+V 3 ) is used to talk about something that will finish by some time in the future. I suppose John will have left when we arrive. I will have done all my homework by the time he comes.
