Welcome to the 7th Grade Reading Program! Seventh grade is the beginning of your middle school adventure. This year we are going to discover all the kinds of reading that are out there. This is your chance to explore many different genres of novels. And who knows; you may discover something outstanding!

The program has two parts.

Each quarter, you will be required to complete two independent novels. The requirements for these books will change each quarter. Our goals are to raise your Lexile (reading comprehension) level, and to prepare you for 8 th grade. Part 1: Required Reading

You will read one novel of your choice; it must be 150 pages or more. You will check the book off with your teacher, and you will do a book talk about it for the class. You will choose one novel from a provided list of medieval books. You will do a class presentation about the book with a small group. First Quarter

Second Quarter Your first book needs to be at least 200 pages long. It must have an AR test, and it must be fiction. You must complete the test by the end of the quarter. The second book needs to be at least 100 pages long. It must be nonfiction, and must fit into the category of autobiography, biography, or memoir (a true story of a real person). You will be writing an essay about this person.

Third Quarter You will read two novels of at least 200 pages long each. One of the books will be your choice. The second book must relate to the third quarter theme of survival. It can be fiction or nonfiction.

Fourth Quarter Your first book must be nonfiction, and must be at least 150 pages. The total pages for this book could be made up of two shorter books on the same topic, as long as the total is still at least 150 pages. Your second book must be 250 pages long, and it must be fiction. The topic is your choice.

Choose books from a variety of genres. This is your year to explore! Choose books in the correct page range, and if possible, near your Lexile level. Do not choose books that have been movies! Do not choose books that have a lot of pictures, such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Your choices are open after you have completed that quarter’s required reading. Your Mission…

At the same time that you are earning an A on your required reading, you may be earning money for a quarterly reading auction! Every page in a completed book becomes a dollar to spend. Part 2: Reading Auctions!

The two books you read each quarter for a grade in language arts can also earn you money. When you take your AR test, complete your class project, or do your presentation, your book will be passed off. The longer the book, the more money you will receive on the auction day! Required Books

After you finish your two required books each quarter, keep reading! Every time you finish a novel, you can pass an AR test or complete a book project to earn even more money for the auction. See your teacher for a list of projects. AR Tests and Book Projects

Every time you finish a book, be sure to pass it off with your teacher! In your classroom you will have a reading contract, which is a pink sheet where you record your completed books. You can write down your books at any time, but you can only receive the pages if you have a teacher signature!
