Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 2/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI The Objectives of the Session Hardware commissioning Machine checkout Beam commissioning 43 bunch oper. ? 75ns ops 25ns ops I Install Phase II and MKB 25ns ops II Stage I IIIII No beamBeam IV I.State the providers’ responsibility as understood by them and identify possible overlap or missing parts at department level II.Have a clear and up-to-date view of the providers’ commitments on the requirements listed in the 2 previous sessions. This should describe:  the equipment/application functionality and performance expected for the different stages  the procedures and tests foreseen to reach these objectives III.Gather the providers’ major issues (i.e. uncovered requirements) and possible ‘Plan B’ Beam

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 3/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Responsibility Definitions  After 2003 major re-structuration, the AB department reviewed the situation this year with the replacement of several group leaders  Responsibility split seems today to be clear and homogeneous for all providers. Basically: Equipment Groups will provide  the equipments  the front end electronics  the front end software based on AB/CO infrastructure  the corresponding expert applications when necessary AB/CO takes care of the rest:  the control services (timing, DB, alarms, OS, FESA…)  the software above the front end servers necessary to operate the machine (operational GUIs, RT feedback, concentrators…)

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 4/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Resources  If the proposed functionality staging is accepted (which seems to be the case but for intensity measurement through BPMs), the situation in terms of internal resources will be manageable for ATB, BI and RF (‘really tight but feasible’, ‘can be handled internally’…)  The situation in the CO group seems more critical. CO claims missing 7 java expert programmers (2 staffs, 5 PA) to cover the LHC application requirements. CO announced difficulty to recruit competent Project Associates. This could lead to a dangerous ‘regulation by saturation’ of the developments instead of ‘planned regulation’. This also mean that CO can not cover currently 24/365 piquet services (on Alarm System [LASER] for instance)

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 5/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Equipment production/installation  ATB: presented delays that are still difficult to quantify Dumps: Ready for Stage 1 (Delays for Sector Test on TDI) Masks: Ready for Stage 1 (Delays for Sector Test or possible absence of the TCDD = Injection Protection Mask) LHC Collimators (TCP,TCS,TCT,TCLA,TCLP,TCHS,TCLI…) :  Phase I is based on 2 installation campaigns to cope with the delays in design and production 1 st campaign will follow ‘standard’ installation planning (04/06 → 02/07) 2 nd campaign will be integrated later (late spring 2007) when collimators are available  Uncertainties on production (brazing issues) still prevents defining today precisely these 2 campaigns.  No bake-out in 3 and 7 would give extra margins.

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 6/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Equipment production/installation  RF: Most of the HW (SC, RF Power, Kickers, Infrastructure) must already be in place for hardware commissioning 400MHz SC cavities are ‘just in time’ for vacuum connection in June/July Wide Band Pick-ups are on schedule  CO: Controls’ HW infrastructure is on good tract.  BI monitors’ production (BPM, BLM, BCT, BWS, BGI, BTVxx, BSRx) is really tight but can follow installation planning, assuming no side effects from ATB developments on TS/MME actual commitments.

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 7/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Front end electronics status  ATB: Low level control just ready before commissioning in 2007 but pre-series available for sector test  RF: low level RF and beam control electronics development will be really tight (15 different modules, 90% necessary for HC) but feasible. Some concerns and a lot of work on noise issues. ‘Initial beam measurements will be important’  CO: Interlock and OASIS HW Ok.

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 8/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Front end electronics status  BI: apart from intensity measurement through the BPMs possibly not ready for the start-up … … BI is in good shape with respect to the proposed cuts for stage 1 & 2.  BPM 100kturn on beam average or one selected bunch  Minimal integration of BCTs into Machine Protection System for start-up based on software (requires extensive changes to electronics)  Three step approach for Q, Q’ and Coupling (1 kick and motion analysis – 2 PLL tune tracking – PLL measurement and feedback) driven by beam test and control of coupling  No Matching monitors. No Bunch or Turn/Turn beam size measurements via BSRT or BGI for stage 1 (B/B ok with BWS)

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 9/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Controls Infrastructure LSA Controls System Core Front End Software Controls Middleware Monitoring & Concentration LSA Trim Beam Steering Settings Generation OP Applic Fixed Displays Controls Settings LSA API Standard Equipment Access (JAPC) Front End Software Timing Expert Applic The architecture already tested in TT40/TI8, HWC, LEIR, SPS is presented as solid. Main core services and several GUI applications are already deployed and used operationally BUT no scalability tests have been done yet. Time and equipment groups involvement is requested to do these mandatory tests.

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 10/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Controls Infrastructure LSA Controls System Core Front End Software Controls Middleware Monitoring & Concentration LSA Trim Beam Steering Settings Generation OP Applic Fixed Displays Controls Settings LSA API Standard Equipment Access (JAPC) Front End Software Timing Expert Applic General Machine Timing functional specifications are still to be defined

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 11/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Controls Infrastructure LSA Controls System Core Front End Software Controls Middleware Monitoring & Concentration LSA Trim Beam Steering Settings Generation OP Applic Fixed Displays Controls Settings LSA API Standard Equipment Access (JAPC) Front End Software Timing Expert Applic Setting management policy and Security strategy are still to be defined

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 12/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Controls Infrastructure LSA Controls System Core Front End Software Controls Middleware Monitoring & Concentration LSA Trim Beam Steering Settings Generation OP Applic Fixed Displays Controls Settings LSA API Standard Equipment Access (JAPC) Front End Software Timing Expert Applic ‘Thin’ Applications should be easy and quick to make BUT still lacking resources (some necessary applications are not attributed yet).

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 13/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Commitments  ATB: Still committed to the proposed phased plan Phase I is based on 2 installation campaigns  This is assuming that production issues are solved and/or that the second campaign can swallow the late collimators Phase II locations prepared for quick installation and ready for nominal intensity  BI: Proposed functionality cut for the different stage 1 & 2 are compatible with the requirements apart from the delay of the BPM intensity measurement which is still requested with insistence.

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 14/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Commitments  RF: Everything necessary is planned to be available on first Day.  CO: “ There are issues on resources, time for testing, remote access and security … … We have the right tools for the job and we will be able to do it, provided effort is not diverted into lower priority work “

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 15/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Summing-up of the necessary actions 1/2  Requirements Mandate somebody or some WG to publish:  the LHC setting management interface and security strategy before the end of March for immediate implementation in CO frameworks  the GMT behaviour and interface before the end of March for immediate implementation in CO framework  Application and front end SW release test and deployment procedures before sector test  the BLM threshold management (remote settings yes/no, function of energy yes/no, limited set of integration times yes/no…) before the end of the year

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 16/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI Summing-up of the necessary actions 2/2  Commitments Avoid ‘Regulation by Saturation’ on LHC applications  Mandate OP to decide when a software reached an acceptable state, allowing the re-deployment of resources on other subjects until everything becomes acceptable.  Ask LSA team to make a list of applications that could be covered by equipment groups or ABP Expert GUIs as a first stage and to discuss it with the groups concerned.  Tests Organize early controls infrastructure scalability and performance tests in addition to Sector Test Foresee and integrate into planning time for dry runs and equipment commissioning  General Issues List, describe and organize the necessary Piquet Services (Alarms, timing, network, equipment front ends…) [On Going…]

Looks not so bad but …  comments and offline workshop discussions are not always on the same tune and often come back to the same key points... Hardware commissioning Machine checkout Beam commissioning 43 bunch oper. ? 75ns ops 25ns ops I Install Phase II and MKB 25ns ops II Stage I IIIII No beamBeam IV Beam

Chamonix XV Session 3 – Summing Up - 18/18 S Bart Pedersen – JJ Gras AB/BI chairman’s understanding on extra necessary actions  Choose whether ‘Operational scenarios should lead planning’  OR ‘Planning should lead operational scenarios’. Should our first LHC machine give priority to protons circulating around the rings in 2007 or to the proposed undated op. scenario?  This should allow to: Freeze around April the layout of the machine to be initially installed and ask AT/VAC to foresee vacuum chambers to replace the equipments that may not be ready and are not strictly necessary with respect to the previous choice. Trace, drill and install the corresponding machine in good conditions, solving production delays issues by planning or vacuum pipes based on previous choice.  State that no ions will be injected into LHC before Q4 2008

That was it for the Minimum Workable LHC! Thank you for your attention. Hardware commissioning Machine checkout Beam commissioning 43 bunch oper. ? 75ns ops 25ns ops I Install Phase II and MKB 25ns ops II Stage I IIIII No beamBeam IV Beam
