Poetry Unit

Poetry A Mother holds her child hands for a little while but there hearts forever A type of literature that is rich in figurative language and unusual in structure

Structural Elements The basic units that make up a poem: lines/verse, stanzas, rhythm, rhyme and meter

Mood The overall attitude or prevailing emotion or tone

Rhyme Rhyme repeats the same ending sounds in different words. Rain - Tiny raindrops start to fall, They leave little dots upon the wall. Birds in trees stop their singing, Much needed water the rain is bringing.

Rhythm The pattern of sound created by the syllables; also called the poem’s beat.

Stanza A stanza is a grouped set of lines/verses in a poem; similar to a paragraph, but found in poetry. Rain Tiny raindrops start to fall, They leave little dots upon the wall. Stanza 1 Birds in trees stop their singing, Much needed water the rain is bringing. Water on leaves and trees and grass, Water on fences and bricks and glass. Rain is falling and the trees start to smile, Stanza 2 It's finally raining, been dry for a while.

Meter A meter is the pattern of rhythm heard when a verse/line is read aloud. Meter sets up a strong pattern of strong and week syllables in each verse/line.

Verse/Line Each line in a poem is called a verse. V/L- 1 Row, row, row your boat V/L -2 Gently down the stream. V/L 3 Merrily, merrily, merrily V/L 4 Life is but a dream
