Teacher Training Week, August 2016 Inductive-Deductive Grammar - Grade 4

TEXT PAGE STANDARD This page will manage your text using the standard PPT text functions on your tool bar. The minimum size for presentations that will be projected to an audience should be 18. The minimum size for slide decks that will be read should be 10 To increase understanding of inductive and deductive approaches to teaching grammar, and their suitability with children. To analyse some activities from Grade 4, to see how inductive/deductive the approach is. To identify examples of inductive/deductive teaching of grammar Aims of the session

TEXT PAGE STANDARD This page will manage your text using the standard PPT text functions on your tool bar. The minimum size for presentations that will be projected to an audience should be 18. The minimum size for slide decks that will be read should be 10 An enquiry-based, language-rich approach to learning. Bridge to Success engages children as active, creative learners. Learners participate in a wide variety of curriculum-based activities and simultaneously acquire content knowledge, develop critical thinking skills and practise English language and literacy. Materials incorporate a ‘learning to learn’ approach, helping children acquire skills and strategies that will help them approach new learning situations with confidence. Bridge to Success - Approach

Read and discuss Handout 1.

TEXT PAGE STANDARD This page will manage your text using the standard PPT text functions on your tool bar. The minimum size for presentations that will be projected to an audience should be 18. The minimum size for slide decks that will be read should be 10 ‘Grammar is a concept which children do not understand until they are about ______ years old.’ -Jean Piaget, Swiss child psychologist Does this mean that they suddenly wake up with this concept? Does this mean that the G4 student has no idea about grammar? Does this mean that the G7 student can understand grammar fully? Children & Grammar

TEXT PAGE STANDARD This page will manage your text using the standard PPT text functions on your tool bar. The minimum size for presentations that will be projected to an audience should be 18. The minimum size for slide decks that will be read should be 10 What approaches can we use to teach grammar? InductiveDeductive Different ways to present language

TEXT PAGE STANDARD This page will manage your text using the standard PPT text functions on your tool bar. The minimum size for presentations that will be projected to an audience should be 18. The minimum size for slide decks that will be read should be 10 What is the difference between the two approaches? “A deductive approach (rule-driven) starts with the presentation of a rule and is followed by examples in which the rule is applied. An inductive approach (rule-discovery) starts with some examples from which a rule is inferred.” Scott Thornbury (1999) Different ways to present language

TEXT PAGE STANDARD This page will manage your text using the standard PPT text functions on your tool bar. The minimum size for presentations that will be projected to an audience should be 18. The minimum size for slide decks that will be read should be 10 Look at the following examples of the two approaches. Which is an example of the inductive approach and which is an examples of the deductive approach? Inductive or Deductive?

Example A I walk to school every day. I walked to school yesterday. Past simple regular verbs = verb + ‘ed’

Now change the verbs… I ________chocolate. (like) Hala ______ video games last night. (play) My friends ________ TV every day. (watch) My father ________ in a bank last year. (work)

Example B I walk to school every day. I walked to school yesterday. What do you notice about the words in red? Why do they change? Make a sentence about something you do every day and something you did yesterday.

Advantages / Disadvantages? Inductive Student interaction and participation. Students rely on their critical thinking to figure out the language. Students gain deeper understanding of the language Deductive Time in the classroom is spent only on the language principle. Most material can be easily taught this way. It encourages faster learning of material

Which is more efficient in the long run? – Inductive tends to be more efficient in the long run Which is less time consuming? – Deductive is less time consuming.

TEXT PAGE STANDARD This page will manage your text using the standard PPT text functions on your tool bar. The minimum size for presentations that will be projected to an audience should be 18. The minimum size for slide decks that will be read should be 10 Look at the materials from grade 4 unit 3. What language point appears in these extracts (note, lessons 2 & 3 are not included, because the language point is not raised between lessons 1 & 4; why do you think that is?) What is here that is more inductive, and what is there that is more deductive? Which approach is used first? Which is more common in the Learners’ Book, and which in the Activity Book? How could you adapt the materials to be more inductive or deductive? Why? For whom? Looking at Grade 4 Materials

Thank you for your participation and attention ☺
