Beginning Teacher Symposium Western Carolina University

Opening Faculty Meeting Listen After the meeting ask questions

After the meeting Get with the other EC faculty Get them to show you where the EC records are Ask the psychologist for your Annual Review list

What to do Order your IEP list in order by date, earliest first. Mark all of your 3 rd year reviews Go ahead and put them in your calendar. (Desktop, Google Calendar etc.)

Teaching Ask for your schedule if you do not already have it Locate materials for your use in class Lesson plan, lesson plan, lesson plan. Stay at least 2 weeks ahead.

Parents Get a list of student demographics from your guidance department or data manager Call each of the parents on your caseload Tell them about yourself, and that you are their child’s personal case manager and you are going to ensure their success while at school Ask them if they have questions for you

Parents Call parents periodically to let them know how their child is doing The first time you talk to the child’s parent should not be a disciplinary call or to set up an IEP meeting Communication is key. Keep the parents informed. More is better.

Modifications Familiarize yourself with each students modifications Distribute modification sheets to all of the child’s teachers. Hand deliver them. Do not place them in boxes. Hand delivery puts a face with the name and lets them know how important that child is to you It is your job to ensure that these children are receiving modifications

Tidbits Be good to your custodians Be good to your Teacher Assistants Be good to your office staff All of these people can make your life easier or miserable.

Later in the year EC work is exhausting, take care of yourself. Get involved with the general student population. Attend school events Volunteer to do something else in the school If you stay in your bubble you will get burned out.
