DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND MITIGATION: AN ENGINEER’S PERSPECTIVE SHUBHI JAIN B.E. 4 th YEAR (e.c.) G.G.I.T.S. JABALPUR

DISASTER Disaster is a sudden, calamitous event bringing great damage, loss, and destruction and devastation to life and property. This influences the mental, socio- economic, political and cultural state of the affected area.

Its Adverse effects : It completely disrupts the normal day to day life. It negatively influences the emergency systems. Normal needs and processes like food, shelter, health, etc. are affected and deteriorate depending on the intensity and severity of the disaster.

Types of DISASTER :

A powerful tremor rocked Jabalpur and its outskirts on of 22 May 1997 which claimed more than 50 lives and rendered more than 6000 people homeless. The tremor originated from a place 20 km north- east of Jabalpur at latitude N and longitude E with an intensity of 6.2 degrees on the Richter Scale, lasting 52 seconds. For Jabalpur most zones of maximum earthquake intensity and frequency occur at the boundaries between the moving plates that form the crust of the earth. Because of bargi dam project nearby, earthquake may strike crises of flood in the city, so a spical focus must be spotted on Jabalpur for avoiding earthquakes, landslides etc. JABALPUR: AN EARTHQUAKE PRONE AREA

DISASTER management Disaster Management is the discipline of dealing with and avoiding risks. It is an action taken by an organization or group of individuals in response to unexpected events that are adversely affecting people or resources and threatening the continued operation of the organization.

Conclusion : Recognizing the fact that hazard mitigation pays high social and economic dividends. With anything of this nature, preparation is the key. We must be ready for the worst to happen because when disaster strikes years of develpoment can be wiped out in seconds.

Disasters would keep happening, we cannot avoid them, so let’s prepare ourselves. Lets build a Disaster Management Information System
