ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Overview of the L1B and L2 Datasets and Processors. Giuseppe Ottavianelli, Igino Coco, Livia D'Alba, Antonio De La Fuente, Enkelejda Qamili, Alessandro Maltese, Luca Mariani, Riccardo Mecozzi, Jan Miedzik, Christian Siemes and the ESL teams. Swarm 5th Data Quality Workshop Session 1 7th-10th September 2015, IPGP Paris

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use NEWS about Swarm News are published on For support and questions News available also on Twitter

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Dataset and Product Baseline (1/3) The term Dataset represents a series of products presenting physical consistency and interoperability. On the FTP swarm-diss.eo.esa.int : The 'Current' folder contains the latest Dataset (composed of the applicable Product Baselines). The 'Previous' folder contains two previous Product Baselines. This folder does not assure interoperability. Therefore in order to correctly select past interoperable Product Baselines, users should refer to the past Dataset webpage. CDF format filename example: SW_OPER_STRCATT_1B_ T000000_ T235959_0301_MDR_SAT_AT.cdf

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use ‘Current’ Dataset Dataset and Product Baseline (2/3)

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Dataset and Product Baseline (3/3) Full description of ‘Current’ Dataset quality information, warnings, important notes…

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Processors recent improvements and future outlook Key recent changes and long term upgrades

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use ORBATT PROCESSOR

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use ORBATT – Key recent improvements Key recent improvements 1.Removed cumulative divergence in some MOD products 2.Fixed L1b orbit number (orbit start / orbit end) computaiton 3.Inclusion of STR samples with BBO detected and “lost-in-space” to include attitudes based on a single camera head unit (CHU)

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use ORBATT new Orbit-number product: ORBxCNT Precise Swarm orbit number information to the scientific user community. The start of an orbit is defined as the Equator crossing of the ascending node. Table I. Orbit Nr Product Contents Name Description orbitOrbit number MJD2000Orbit start date/time in MJD2000 dateOrbit start date UTOrbit start time phi_ANLongitude of orbit starts (degree) Source Source of orbit number information 1.Best quality 2.Reduced quality

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use ORBATT – Possible future changes Long term analysis of the STR inter-boresight angles (IBA) reveals a possible temperature dependency of the IBA. Models of this effect will be analysed and tested and the analysis findings may result in an update of the STR Level 1b processing algorithm using the STR temperature information and additional CCDB parameters. ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use MAGNET PROCESSOR

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use MAGNET – Key recent improvements Various minor issues solved Key recent improvements 1.New parameters added in CDF products 2.Handling of Swarm Charlie ASM loss 3.Integration of ASM-VFM scalar residual correction into OP

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Correction of sun-induced disturbance by co-estimation of :  Adjusted VFM pre-flight Calibration values  Magnetic disturbance field  based on Sun incident angles on the spacecraft and treated as a Magnetic stray field at the VFM sensor position : dB Sun MAGNET – ASM-VFM Scalar Residuals On FTP: corrected data from the beginning to the mission. Correction implemented in the Operational Processor from mid Summer.

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use MAGNET - future improvements The OP/PP cross-verification efforts will be continued and any further improvement will be implemented. Based on the continuous investigation on the ASM-VFM scalar residuals and the Task Force findings, an update of the correction model could be scheduled.

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use ACCELE PROCESSOR

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use ACCELE – Key recent improvements Issues solved 1.Fixed transformation from ARF (accelerometer reference frame) to the CRF (spacecraft reference frame) 2.Fixed sign of acceleration-correction for the gravity gradient effect and for the centrifugal effect 3.Fixed ACCx_PR accelerometer data start and stop samples 4.Precision of Proof Mass Positions in ACCx_PR_1B : scale factor (“SF”) of the element “p” of ACCx_PR_1B has been changed from 7 to 9

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Instrument characterisation has made some major advanced. On-going efforts by dedicated teams. Future approach : implement an “off-line” consolidation step with dedicated L2 chains and a SIL. ACCELE – Long term updates

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use PLASMA PROCESSOR

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use PLASMA – Operation Processor Status 1. LP: OP-PP cross-verification succesfull. OP generating data since mid mid July TII: OP-PP corss verification on-going. Instrument characterisation on-going. From February 5 th 2015 a preliminary dataset is available to all the registered users on: ftp://swarm-diss.eo.esa.int/Advanced/Provisional_Plasma_dataset Langmuir_Probes_Data: daily zipped ASCII files, produced by IRF (Uppsala, Sweden) covering from Beginning of mission and regularly updated. Thermal_Ion_Imagers_Data: daily zipped CDF files, produced by the Univ. of Calgary (Canada), covering from 15/04/2014 for S/C A and B for shorter periods and updated.

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Level 2

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Level 2 Cat-2 (run at PDGS) ‘Current’ Dataset

ESA UNCLASSIFIED – For Official Use Level 2 Cat-1 (run at ESL) The following products are now available to Swarm users: Spherical harmonic models of the main (core) field and its temporal variation: MCO_SHA_2C from the comprehensive inversion and MCO_SHA_2D from the dedicated inversion Spherical harmonic model of the large-scale magnetospheric field and its Earth-induced counterpart: MMA_SHA_2C from the comprehensive inversion and MMA_SHA_2F from the fast track production chain 1D model of the mantle conductivity: MIN_1DM_2_ 1D electromagnetic transfer functions (C-responses): MCR_1DM_2_ The lithospheric and ionospheric field models will be released in the coming weeks.
