RI What is NEXPReS? NEXPReS = Novel EXplorations Pushing Robust e-VLBI Services Three years (start 1 July 2010) Funded through the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/ ), Contract n°: RI Budget: 5,745,000 € (EC contribution: 3,500,000 €) Objective: further improve the astronomy technique of electronic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (e-VLBI) with the objective of incorporating it into every experiment conducted by the European VLBI Network (EVN) Means: develop data caching and implement dynamically provisioned network resources to offer the best of both worlds: the data archiving and re- processing afforded by traditional disk-based VLBI and the speed and flexibility of e-VLBI Event – Location - Date Slide: 3

RI What are VLBI and e-VLBI? Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Multiple radio telescopes, located hundreds or thousands of miles apart, are used simultaneously to examine the same region of sky at the same time. The simulated telescope, as big as a continent, offers higher resolution than the most powerful optical telescopes in the world. Data is recorded onto hard disks and shipped to the “correlator”, a purpose-built supercomputer, for processing at a later date. The astronomer receives correlated data weeks after the observation. Strength: Data is recorded and can be reprocessed later. Weaknesses: Weeks between observation and data to astronomer, telescope problems detected too late; little flexibility for “target of opportunity” observations (ToO) Electronic VLBI (e-VLBI) Data from telescopes is streamed directly to the correlator. Astronomer receives correlated data hours after the observation. If transient activity is detected (e.g. supernovae, gamma ray bursts), follow-on observations can be scheduled immediately. Strengths: Astronomer receives data in hours; telescope problems detected immediately and corrected; ToO observations possible. Weakness: network problems delay data; data not recorded Event – Location - Date Slide: 7
