1 Math CAMPPP 2011 Breakout Session 1: Algebraic Thinking

2 Learning Goals I will understand the three key patterning concepts (additive, multiplicative, and algebraic thinking). I will identify the mathematics necessary to respond to students in the moment. 2

What’s Your Number Again?? Revisit your goal from Monday. How is it going? As a group, revisit your chart paper and revise it as necessary. Do you want to fish in deeper waters? 3

Before/Part 1/Minds On: A Few Quiet Moments What did you hear in the breakout sessions with Ruth and Cathy that resonated with you, or gave you a different perspective? Please jot down a few notes in your journal. 4

During/Part 2/Action: Problem Solving Kempenfelt Conference Centre has suddenly decided to include a new lunchroom as part of their facilities because it was so busy today. Mrs. Chen, the facilities manager, found an amazing sale on trapezoid shaped tables so she decided to buy many of these tables for the new lunchroom. 5

During/Part 2/Action Problem Solving While Kaye Appleby was waiting for Mrs. Chen’s tables to be delivered, she thought she would draw a plan for the lunchroom. You see, Mrs. Chen wanted to place the chairs around the table so that 2 chairs will go on the long side of the trapezoid and one chair on every other side of the table. This way 5 Math Campppers could sit around 1 table. 6

During/Part 2/Action Problem Solving Kaye suggested she could join 2 tables like this: Now 8 CAMPPPers can sit around 2 tables. How many CAMPPPers can sit around 3 tables joined this way? How many can sit around 56 tables joined this way? What is the rule? How did you figure it out? 7

After/Part 3/Consolidation We will use a Bansho for sharing our collective thinking Please use the LNS Bansho monograph for your own professional reading. 8

After/Part 3/Consolidation Working with a grade-level partner, please reflect and discuss the following two questions: 1.What math do you see in this problem? 2.Where do you see this math in our Ontario curriculum? 9

Fishing for Your Thoughts It matters not how many fish are in the sea if you don't have any bait on your hook. -Anonymous Today’s symbol for your fishing hat is a hook. Please reflect on the following questions, and jot your thoughts down on a fish: What hooked you today? What do you still need to know about the three algebraic representations? 10
