Fall Protection Simulator

Key items to cover for traveling on a beam without a lifeline include: Zachry Best Practice: Employee shall be instructed in the safe use of beam sliders or “beamers” o Beamers are the preferred and primary method for traveling on a beam without a horizontal lifeline. Beam slider clamps must be used instead of Lanyard Extensions whenever possible. When tying off overhead is not an option, then all beams must be “cooned” rather than walked (see picture below).

Fall Protection Simulator Zachry Best Practice: Safe Use of “Lanyard Extensions” Lanyard Extensions needed for a particular task require approval from the General Field Superintendent, Craning and Rigging Superintendent and the Project Safety Manager Lanyard Extensions may not be used on any beam that is being walked. Every attempt to tie the Lanyard Extensions overhead must be made, this will greatly decrease the likelihood of striking the ground or any structural support between the employee and the ground. When tying off overhead is not an option, then all beams must be “cooned” rather than walked (see picture below) At Zachry a Lanyard Extension longer than 6 feet will not be allowed unless the size of the beam requires a larger size Lanyard Extension; this determination will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Fall Protection Simulator Ensure that employees verify that a lifeline has been inspected by a competent person before utilizing a lifeline. Walking on open iron beam is allowed only when a properly engineered lifeline is installed.

Fall Protection Simulator Transition from an Iron Beam to Scaffolding Key items to cover for transitioning from a lifeline to scaffolding: – Ensuring that a current scaffold tag is present. – Transition from a lifeline to a self-retracting lifeline (Yo-Yo) on scaffolding ladder.

Fall Protection Simulator 100% tie off Required while on scaffold. 100% tie off Demonstrated while descending a scaffold ladder equipped with a Yo-Yo
