Needs Assessment  Need to have a good idea about the community  Purpose is to find out all you can about the community and the resources  Great way to start the network process

Assessment  Environment and Resources: factors that separate a community from its environment and maintain the integrity of the community Boundary lines, Transportation services Public services Land use  Shopping Area  Industries  Housing  Recreational facilities and areas  Schools

Assessment Environment and Resources (cont) Health facilities and organization/nursing services Churches Communication system and facilities Sanitation Community hazards-safety efforts Government Emergency System

Assessment  Population Total population Age and sex distribution Racial and ethnic distribution Educational level Employment – unemployment Economic level- income Type Area “High Risk”, “High Mobility”, “Poor Health Area”, “Rich Area” Mortality and Morbidity rates Leading causes of death

Analysis of Data Necessary to identify the problems, needs, strengths and trends in the community Need to analyze demographic and personal characteristics, which are important to consider when planning and implementing health programs. Review of the literature regarding the problem and possible solutions Goals: the purpose or reason the community exists Set factors: the physical and psychosocial characteristics of the community that affect behavior

6 Criteria for Consideration  Community assessment  Community involvement  Health Center’s ability to influence  Availability of expertise  Outcomes if not resolved  How fast can the problem be resolved

Where to look  Foundations Online:  Govspot.com:  Look at local and national companies and organizations: American Heart Subway Public Health Department and local hospital foundations

Where to look Local Universities Local banks Check out State resources  Extension programs  Medicaid and Medicare As your Librarian for help

Timeout  Break into groups and brainstorm about what are possible resources?  Come back to the group with a list that are possibilities when you return home.

What to say  Awareness of the problem  Motivation to resolve the problem  Ability to influence problem solution  Availability of expertise  Severity of outcomes if the problem is unresolved  Speed at which the problem can be solved
