 HIV/AIDS clip HIV/AIDS clip

 From having unprotected sexual contact with an infected person.  By sharing needles with an infected person  Through open wounds or orifices where a person’s contaminated fluids enters.  Least common form of transmission: (not a lifestyle choice for child) From mother to baby before, during or after birth.

 Hugging/ kissing someone with it  Sharing a drink  Swimming in a pool  Using the same toilet  Mosquito or bug bites

 The #1 most common way to prevent contracting an infectious disease is to practice ABSTINENCE!  Wear rubber gloves whenever cleaning up anyone’s bodily fluids (this is called taking universal precautions)treat everyone like they have a communicable disease you can catch.  Do not share needles for any reason

These are the names given to infections that are spread from person to person through sexual contact.

 Often there are NO signs or symptoms of many STIs  The infection can get worse especially if it is not treated  Can transmit it to others if you are unaware that you have contracted an infection

Symptoms Long- Term consequences  Pain or burning during urination  Yellow discharge  Lumps, bumps or sores  Pelvic Inflammatory Disease  Infertility (cannot have children)  Organ damage  Cervical cancer (in women, cause by the Human Papillomavirus or HPV )  Death

Abstinence: The conscious, active CHOICE to not participate in risky behaviors. *Think about risky behaviors, what are some things you can chose to abstain from that may improve your lifestyle?  Abstain from ALL sexual activities! ( Abstinence is the ONLY 100% effective way to assure yourself you will not contract a Sexually Transmitted Infection)  Keeping yourself healthy: › Make safe and healthy choices think of H.E.L.P. › Remember what you know/have learned in health class
