AMERICAN DIFFERENTIAL PSYCHOLOGIST (19 DEC 08 – 4 MAY 01) Anne Anastasi 2. Would you prefer to teach classes with all different students each year or classes like the ones mentioned in the article? 3. Do you agree that “caring” is a good theme to add as a purpose to schools? Or is it pointless?

Intelligence What is an intelligent person?

Intelligence Anastasi believed that “intelligence is not a single, unitary ability, but rather a composite of several functions. The term denotes that combination of abilities required for survival and advancement within a particular CULTURE.” She stated: each culture has its own definition of what an intelligent person is there are ways to measure what skills and knowledge a person has acquired in life

Early Education New York City home schooling and private tutor until age 9 public elementary after her grandmother gave in dropped out of high school after only two months because of overcrowding and other harsh conditions

College Education -studied for two years to take the college entrance exam; she passed, of course -entered Barnard College at the age of 15. -age 19, she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology -sought to pursue another degree-her doctorate -Columbia University accepted her undergrad work in place of a Master’s Degree -obtained her Ph.D. in Psychology in 1929

Career Has been a professor of Psychology at three universities including Barnard College Has been president of different divisions of the APA and president of the APF 3 rd female president of the APA “Extensive examination of issues related to test construction, test misuse, misinterpretation and cultural bias” is her main contribution

Intelligence Tests Should not be misinterpreted or used to label students, as intelligence changes over time Should only be used “to determine a student’s CURRENT level of academic performance” making it easier to meet his or her needs

Publications Anastasi has written over 150 publications Of these, two are textbooks – Psychological Testing and Differential Psychology

Other Interesting Facts Known as the “test guru” The obvious personality differences of members of her family contributed to her curiosity and studies in psychology
