Childhood ▪Born in New Orleans. Birthplace of Jazz! ▪Raised by his mom and grandma. ▪Wanted to help his mom make money. – Sold newspapers and hauled coal as little boy

Love of Music ▪Age 11 – dropped out of school to sing on street corners. ▪Met a band director and learned to play the cornet. ▪Spent his free time listening to local bands and performing! ▪Met “King” Oliver – Cornet expert – Taught Louis to play better.

Traveling the United States ▪Spent 3 years performing on steamboats on the Mississippi River ▪Joined “King” Oliver’s band in Chicago in ▪Moved to New York in 1924 and began his solo career. ▪Switched to the trumpet. ▪Nobody could play Louis! – Energetic and creative!
