Tips for writing a sports story

Include the 5 W’s – this gives the reader a concise summary of the story Include an important or interesting fact to get reader’s attention such as: this is the fifteenth loss in a row, or the team has extended their winning streak to 10 in a row

Newspaper articles include metaphors/analogies Technical sports terms Vibrant language – great word choice (exciting language) They are direct and to the point

Know the rules History League standings Current controversies if any

Report the basic chronology: beginning, middle and end of the event Give details about the major moments, turning points, big mistakes, momentum shifts Pay attention to who does what

Include quotes from players, coaches, anyone involved

Like regular news articles, sports articles should correctly present the facts. (for your own story, try to be as correct as possible)
