Mixed Review Substitution and Elimination Methods Long Test # 2 – Sept. 17

Objectives Identify the method appropriate to use in solving a system of linear equations. Answer a Practice Test.

2y – 5x = -1 x = 2y + 5 How to choose what method to use 1. A variable is already isolated on one side of the equation. Substitution

4x - y = 6 8x + y = 24 Elimination by Addition 2. Two variables are on one side and the coefficients of one variable are additive inverses.

Elimination by Subtraction 3. Two variables are on one side and the coefficients of one variable are the same. 4x - 5y = 17 x - 5y = 8

x + y = 4 3x + 4y = Two variables are on one side of the equation & the constant is on the other side. Elimination by multiplication and addition/subtraction

We need to check the value of x and y by substitution into equation (1) and (2). We may substitute the value of the first to ANY of the two equations Addition or Subtraction. By eliminating one variable, we are left with one unknown in one linear equation. By what operation can we eliminate a variable in the given system? How do we find the value of the other variable? How do we know if the value of x and y are correct?

Solve by substitution method.

Solve by Elimination method.

Find two numbers whose sum is 67 and whose difference is 3. Let x be the greater number and y be the smaller number.

The sum of two numbers is 20. Their difference is 6. What are the numbers? Let x be the greater number and y be the smaller number.

Try This Find two numbers whose sum is 138 and whose difference is 88.

Try This The sum of two numbers is 36 and their difference is 9. Find the two numbers.

Try This The sum of two numbers is 36 and their difference is 9. Find the two numbers.
