REGIONS Regions are large areas or segments of the Earth’s surface defined by a set of characteristics (i.e. climate or physical background)

REGIONS Micro-Regions – a very small area of the Earth’s surface defined by a set of characteristics (i.e. a city or neighbourhood)

REGIONS Homogeneous Regions A region defined by a common characteristic, or set of characteristics throughout the whole region Functional Regions A region defined by a specific function or activity

ROAD TRIP TO FLORIDA

1.Select a destination (Miami, St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Orlando, Daytona Beach). 2.Write a one-page summary on the location. Talk about why you’d like to go there. What are the attractions? What is the weather like? What accommodations are there? What activities are there? Where is it located in Florida? CLIMATE OF CARIBBEAN Attractive for most of the year December to April – warm and dry May to November – humid and wet Trade Winds – prevailing, constant winds blowing from the east across the Atlantic Ocean. Produce pleasant and cooling effect. Windward – side of island facing wind! More rainfall, rocky and dense vegetation Leeward – side of island protected from the wind (most hotels and resorts located there)

HURRICANES

In early fall, hurricanes have caused much destruction in the Caribbean islands. This damage affects the citizens of each country, and has done tremendous damage to the tourism infrastructure The Caribbean has seen an increasing number of Category 5 hurricanes over recent years: Hurricane Sandy Haiti, dead Hurricane Felix, Leeward Islands, 2007 – 130 dead Hurricane Wilma, Jamaica, Hispanola – 87 dead
