C. Assert abandonment is necessary to make Christ’s death a true sacrifice; emphasizes his humanity. D. Makes a dramatic picture of Christ’s suffering which moves people to tears.

WAS CHRIST FORSAKEN BY GOD? THE TRUTH ABOUT “ABANDONMENT” LET THIS CUP PASS: Cannot be abandonment! A. “When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.” (Jn 8:28). 1. “I AM” [ego eimi] (Jn. 8:24, 28, 58). 2. “I AM” [ego eimi] (Ex. 3:14 Sept). His humanity was obvious to onlookers.

WAS CHRIST FORSAKEN BY GOD? THE TRUTH ABOUT “ABANDONMENT” LET THIS CUP PASS: Cannot be abandonment! B. “And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.” (Jn 8:29) 1. Why did God NOT leave Jesus alone? 2. Did Jesus ever STOP doing what pleased the Father?

C. “Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.” (John 16:32) 1. Even when disciples were scattered (throughout His trial & crucifixion) Jesus would not be alone!

WAS CHRIST FORSAKEN BY GOD? THE TRUTH ABOUT “ABANDONMENT” LET THIS CUP PASS: Cannot be abandonment! D. “Faithful is the saying: For if we died with him, we shall also live with him: if we endure, we shall also reign with him: if we shall deny him, he also will deny us: if we are faithless, he abideth faithful; for he cannot deny himself.” (2 Tim.2:11-13) “I and the Father are one.” (Jn. 10:30, 33; 1:1ff)

C. “It is finished” (Jn. 19:30; cp. Ps. 22:31 KJV). 1. The Jews thought Him JUST A MAN & FORSAKEN BY GOD! 2. But Jesus quoted Scripture for the purpose of CONFIRMING His Deity! 3. WAS CHRIST FORSAKEN BY GOD? THE TRUTH ABOUT “ABANDONMENT” IV. CAUSES & CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR (Mt. 16:6-12). A. When people assert that Jesus died in spirit as well as in body & say God separated Himself from Jesus... - Implies God forsook one who NEVER SINNED (Heb. 4:15; 1 Cor. 1:9, 10:13; 1 Jn. 1:9; etc.)! - or Implies that Jesus was in sin (2 Cor. 5:21; Heb. 10:5-8; Ezk. 18)!
