What are Phrasal Verbs ? Phrasal verbs are two words that consist of a verb with a preposition, for example “look at”, “get up”...etc. These prepositions are sometimes called particles ( a preposition that can combine with a verb to form a phrasal verb) Look at P.184 !

Phrasal Verbs Phrasal Verbs Example: Example: separable: I can turn on the radio/ I can turn the radio on inseparable: I can look after him/ (and not "I can look him after") A. Inseparable Phrasal Verbs When the particle can be in only one place in the sentence. A. Inseparable Phrasal Verbs When the particle can be in only one place in the sentence. B. Separable Phrasal Verbs When we can change the place of the particle without affecting the sentence’s meaning. B. Separable Phrasal Verbs When we can change the place of the particle without affecting the sentence’s meaning. Look at P.184 !

2- Some phrasal verbs can have a noun or pronoun between the verb and the particle. Verb+ (Noun or Pronoun)+ Particle Examples ask (someone) aboutShe asked the children about their day. borrow(something)from(someone)She borrowed some milk from her friend. help (someone) withHe helped the neighbour with his car. lend (someone) to someoneShe lent her friend some milk. remind (someone) ofYou remind me of your mother. Look at P.184 !

3- With the phrasal verbs in the previous group, the particle does not change the basic meaning of the verb. However, the following group shows that there are many verb+particle combinations in which the particle changes the meaning of the verb. The meanings of the two words together is different from the meanings of the verb and the preposition by themselves. * These verb+particle combinations have an idiomatic meaning. They are different from sentences with prepositional phrases.

* Compare the prepositions or particles in these sentences below. * Compare the prepositions or particles in these sentences below. Look at P.184 !
