Warm Up: Why do we study geography?

geography “earth’s description”

5 Themes of Geography 1. location 2. places 3. region 4. human environment interaction 5. movement

Location absolute location: the exact spot at which the place is found on the globe, use the grid system relative location: location in relation to other places

Location hemispheres: two halves, North and South equator: line that circles the earth midway between the North and South Poles prime meridian: line that divides earth into East and West hemispheres, runs north and south through Greenwich, England.

Longitude and Latitude Latitude: degrees north or south of the equator Longitude: degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian Example: Colorado Springs is at 38° 49' N 104° 43' W.

Place place: particular space with physical and human meaning

Region regions: areas united by specific factors factors can include vegetation, climate, language, religion, government, etc.

What lines of latitude and longitude divide the globe into hemispheres? In what hemispheres do you live?

Human Environment Interaction How we adapt, change and depend on environment ecosystem: community of plants and animals that depend on each other, and surroundings, for survival

Movement movement of people, goods, and ideas.

How would knowing about the geography of a particular city might influence your decision to move there?
